This product contains one active ingredient: pantethine (also known by the brand name Pantesin). It's a precursor to coenzyme A, a molecule your body uses in energy production and fat metabolism.
The capsule also contains two inactive ingredients: hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (a common capsule material) and L-leucine (an amino acid used as an excipient).
Does it work?
Moderate evidence
Pantethine is rated Possibly Effective for hyperlipoproteinemia (a condition involving abnormal blood fat levels). For athletic performance and other types of high cholesterol (hyperlipidemia), the evidence is insufficient—we don't have enough reliable data to say whether it works.
For pantothenate kinase-associated neurodegeneration (PKAN), a rare inherited disorder, evidence is also insufficient.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Pantethine is generally well tolerated in studies, but long-term safety data are limited. The most common side effects are mild and gastrointestinal: nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, epigastric discomfort (upper belly pain), bloating, and flatulence.
Mild itching has been reported rarely. There isn't enough reliable safety data during pregnancy, so it's best avoided unless your doctor advises otherwise.
Safety during breastfeeding has not been well studied; talk with your doctor or pharmacist about whether it's right for you if you're nursing.
