What’s inside
Full disclosure
Phyto-Gen Sea Buckthorn Bud is a one-ingredient supplement: a liquid extract of sea buckthorn buds. The extract is suspended in a base of purified water, ethanol (alcohol), and glycerin, which help preserve it and make it easy to take by mouth.
Does it work?
Moderate evidence
The evidence for sea buckthorn is mixed and incomplete. It's rated possibly effective for burns based on available research.
For eczema (atopic dermatitis), the data suggests it may not work. For other uses—lowering cholesterol (dyslipidemia), anti-aging effects on skin, and cancer prevention—there isn't enough reliable evidence to say whether it helps or not.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Sea buckthorn is generally well tolerated when eaten as a food, but the safety of supplement doses hasn't been fully studied yet. At very high doses, it can cause temporary yellow staining of the skin—one case reported yellow skin after someone took 100 grams daily for 6 months.
A small number of people using sea buckthorn topically experienced dryness, irritation, redness, or rash (rash appeared in 4% of one study group). There isn't enough reliable safety data on supplement use while breastfeeding, so use caution and talk it over with your doctor or pharmacist.
Pregnancy safety data is not on file for this ingredient.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Before taking this product, check with your pharmacist or doctor if you're on blood thinners (including aspirin used for heart protection) or blood pressure medications. Sea buckthorn may increase bleeding risk with anticoagulants and antiplatelet drugs, and may lower blood pressure further if combined with blood pressure medications.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with some supporting evidence behind its ingredients' uses. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
Sea buckthorn may help with burns, but evidence for other uses is weak or missing. If you take blood pressure medications or blood thinners, you'll want to check your exact drugs with your pharmacist before starting this supplement.
Even though it's a plant extract, supplement doses aren't well studied, so it's worth a conversation with your doctor or pharmacist first.
