Piracetam has possibly effective evidence for several conditions: tardive dyskinesia (involuntary movements), breath-holding attacks, vertigo (spinning sensation), epilepsy, recovery after coronary artery bypass graft surgery, and dyslexia. Piracetam is generally well tolerated when taken by mouth, but it's important to know it's a drug — not a true dietary supplement — and it's unapproved in the U.S., with variable product quality. The most common side effects are constipation, stomach upset, high blood pressure, rash, and weight gain.
Rare but serious neurologic side effects include agitation, anxiety, behavioral changes, dizziness, drowsiness, excessive movement, sleep problems, and slurred speech. One case report noted abnormally heavy menstrual bleeding.
Avoid piracetam in pregnancy — there isn't enough safety data. Also avoid it while breastfeeding, since it may pass into milk and safety is unknown.
