Piracetam and Argatroban

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Major

ANTICOAGULANT/ANTIPLATELET DRUGS

Why this applies to Argatroban

Argatroban falls under ANTICOAGULANT/ANTIPLATELET DRUGS — the group Piracetam interacts with.

Theoretically, concomitant use of piracetam and anticoagulant/antiplatelet drugs might increase the risk of bleeding.
Preliminary clinical research shows that a single dose of piracetam inhibits platelet aggregation.
Severity Major Likelihood Probable Evidence B

Interaction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports..

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the simple version: Argatroban is a powerful blood thinner given by IV, usually in the hospital to stop dangerous clots (often when someone can't use heparin). It works by blocking thrombin, a key clotting protein. Piracetam doesn't change how Argatroban is broken down, but early research suggests piracetam can make platelets (the cells that help blood clot) a little less sticky on their own.

So when you stack these two, you may push the body further toward bleeding. With a strong agent like Argatroban, that could mean easy bruising, nosebleeds, bleeding gums, or more serious internal bleeding. Since this drug is closely monitored in the hospital, tell the care team about any piracetam use so they can watch you carefully. Don't start or stop anything on your own.

What These Ratings Mean

Every interaction above is graded three ways — here’s the key to each label.

Severity how clinically significant the interaction is
Major

  • LikelyWell-controlled human studies have demonstrated the likely existence of this interaction.
  • ProbableInteraction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports.
  • PossibleInteraction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
  • UnlikelyInteraction has been demonstrated in animal or in lab research but has been shown not to occur in humans.
Evidence the quality of the studies behind the rating (graded A–D)
  • AHigh-quality meta-analysis (quantitative systematic review).

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Argatroban page

“Argatroban is an intravenous blood thinner, usually given in the hospital when heparin cannot be used, so anyone receiving it already carries real bleeding risk. That is exactly where this list bears down.”

About Piracetam

What is Piracetam?

  • Memory and cognition ('nootropic')
  • Cognitive decline and dementia
  • Myoclonus
  • Dyslexia in children
  • Vertigo

Piracetam is a synthetic 'nootropic' drug studied mainly for cognitive decline, myoclonus, and certain neurological conditions, but evidence for boosting memory in healthy people is weak. It is a prescription medicine in many countries and is not an approved drug or dietary supplement in the United States, so quality and safety of products sold online vary. Talk to a doctor or pharmacist before using it.
