Every active ingredient lists its own amount on the label.

Why this rating?
  • The label discloses an exact amount for 1 of its 1 active ingredient.
  • No proprietary blends here — you can verify the dose of every single component.

This product contains one active ingredient: pregnenolone at 25 mg per tablet. Pregnenolone is a steroid hormone precursor — your body can convert it into other hormones like estrogen, progesterone, and testosterone.

The remaining ingredients are inactive fillers and binders (mannitol, sorbitol, cellulose compounds, silicon dioxide, stearic acid, magnesium stearate) and natural cherry flavor to make the tablet taste better.

Evidence for Intended Use · database check
By FDA rules, dietary supplements can’t claim to treat, cure, or prevent disease — so labels speak in careful marketing language. We discern each product’s intended use from its name, label claims, and label statements, then grade the clinical evidence for that use. How these ratings are computed
Not assessable

This is a single-ingredient Pregnenolone product and its label doesn't state a use — see Pregnenolone's own graded uses on its monograph.

Why this rating?
  • We looked at the product name, claims, and label statements and couldn't find a stated purpose to grade.

We don't have reliable evidence in our data to rate pregnenolone's effectiveness for any of the conditions listed on this product — including alcohol use disorder, Alzheimer disease, autism spectrum disorder, back pain, and bipolar disorder. That doesn't mean it doesn't work; it means the research so far isn't strong enough to say one way or the other.

Talk with your doctor about what the current evidence shows for whatever you're considering this for.

How safe is it?

Well-documented data
Safety Information · database check
Well characterized

Adverse-effect, pregnancy, and general safety data are on file for most of these ingredients.

Why this rating?
  • We hold adverse-effect (side-effect) data for 1 of the 1 matched ingredient.
  • Pregnancy & breastfeeding safety ratings cover 1 of 1.
  • General safety write-ups exist for 1 of 1.
  • Remember: this measures how much safety information exists. Thin data is not the same as being safe.

Pregnenolone is generally well tolerated when taken by mouth, but it is a hormone with limited human safety data, so use it only under guidance from a healthcare professional. The most common side effects reported are acne, agitation, diarrhea, drowsiness, excitement, hair loss, sweating, and tremor.

Some people have also reported skin rashes, possibly tied to sun sensitivity, though these cleared on their own. Because this is a hormone supplement, it should be avoided during pregnancy due to unknown risks, and there isn't enough safety information to use it while breastfeeding — talk with your doctor or pharmacist if either applies to you.

Why this rating?
  • 1 of the 1 matched ingredient can interact with medications — Pregnenolone.

Before taking this product, double-check with your doctor or pharmacist if you're on estrogens (including birth control), progestins, progesterone, testosterone, or benzodiazepines (sedatives like diazepam). These are the medication types most likely to be affected by pregnenolone.

The bottom line

Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with no assessable stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.

Pregnenolone is a hormone precursor that may enhance the effects of estrogens, progestins, progesterone, and testosterone, and may reduce how well benzodiazepines work. If you take any of these medications, check with your doctor or pharmacist before starting this product.

Because it's a hormone with limited safety data, use it only under professional guidance.

Benzodiazepines

Concomitant use of pregnenolone may reduce the effects of benzodiazepines.
Very preliminary clinical research shows that chronic use of pregnenolone reduces sedative effects of diazepam when compared with chronic use of placebo. This effect may be related to the activity of pregnenolone at GABAA receptors.

Likelihood Probable Evidence B
Estrogens

Theoretically, taking pregnenolone might enhance the effects of estrogens.
Pregnenolone is a precursor for several steroid hormones, including estrogens.

Likelihood Possible Evidence D
Progesterone

Theoretically, taking pregnenolone might enhance the effects of progesterone.
In humans, some research shows that oral administration of pregnenolone can increase levels of progesterone. However, other research shows no effect on progesterone levels. It is possible the impact of pregnenolone on progesterone levels may be dose dependent.

Likelihood Possible Evidence D
Progestin

Theoretically, taking pregnenolone might enhance the effects of progestin.
Pregnenolone is a precursor for several steroid hormones, including progestin.

Likelihood Possible Evidence D
Testosterone

Theoretically, taking pregnenolone might enhance the effects of testosterone.
Pregnenolone is a precursor for several steroid hormones, including testosterone. However, preliminary clinical research shows that taking pregnenolone 30-500 mg orally daily for up to 8 weeks does not affect testosterone levels.

Pregnenolone Cherry Flavored 25 mg by Source Naturals: Common Questions

Does Pregnenolone Cherry Flavored 25 mg by Source Naturals interact with any medications?
Yes. Based on its ingredients, Pregnenolone Cherry Flavored 25 mg has a known interaction with 82 medications. Use the checker to see how it interacts with a specific drug.
How can one product interact with so many drugs?
Pregnenolone Cherry Flavored 25 mg contains a single active ingredient, and that one ingredient can interact with many different medications on its own. We check it against each medication and show the mechanism responsible.
Where does this information come from?
The product label data comes from the NIH Dietary Supplement Label Database (DSLD); the interaction data is built on the Natural Medicines database and reviewed by HelloPharmacist pharmacists.
Can I take pregnenolone if I'm on birth control?
You should check with your doctor or pharmacist first. Pregnenolone may enhance the effects of estrogens in birth control pills, which could change how they work or how you feel. Your doctor can advise whether it's safe for you to combine them.
What are the most common side effects?
The most common ones reported are acne, agitation, diarrhea, drowsiness, excitement, hair loss, sweating, and tremor. A small number of people have also reported skin rashes. Most side effects are mild, but talk with your doctor if any bother you or don't go away.
Is there enough evidence that pregnenolone works for Alzheimer's disease or back pain?
No — our data shows insufficient reliable evidence to rate pregnenolone for those conditions or any others on this product label. If you're considering it for a specific health issue, ask your doctor what the current research actually supports.
Can I take pregnenolone while pregnant or breastfeeding?
No — hormone supplements should be avoided during pregnancy due to unknown risks, and there isn't enough safety information to use it while breastfeeding. Talk with your doctor or pharmacist before taking this product if you're pregnant, breastfeeding, or planning to become pregnant.
Why does pregnenolone interact with so many hormone medications?
Pregnenolone is a building block your body converts into estrogens, progesterone, testosterone, and other hormones. When you add pregnenolone, you may amplify the effects of medications that contain those same hormones — that's why your doctor needs to know about it.
