HelloPharmacist Scorecard of Pro-Bio Chewable Wafers by Kirkman
Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Full disclosure
Pro-Bio Chewable Wafers contains 6 active probiotic ingredients: Lactobacillus acidophilus, Lactobacillus rhamnosus, Bifidobacterium bifidum, Streptococcus thermophilus, Lactobacillus plantarum, and Lactobacillus casei. These are all live beneficial bacteria intended to support digestive and immune health.
The product also contains inactive ingredients including dextrose, xylitol, silicon dioxide, stearic acid, and magnesium stearate — these are fillers and binders that hold the wafers together.
Does it work?
Moderate evidence
Evidence for these probiotics is mixed depending on the condition. L. acidophilus and B. bifidum are rated possibly effective for irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and possibly effective for antibiotic-associated diarrhea.
L. acidophilus is also possibly effective for Helicobacter pylori infection and bacterial vaginosis. B. bifidum shows possibly effective evidence for respiratory tract infections.
For many other conditions listed — allergic rhinitis, anxiety, Alzheimer's disease, diabetes — the evidence we hold is insufficient to rate these ingredients. Streptococcus thermophilus has insufficient evidence for all the conditions in our data.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
These probiotics are generally well tolerated in healthy adults and children. That said, people with weakened immune systems should check with their doctor before use — there's a theoretical risk that live probiotic organisms could cause infection in someone who's already immunocompromised.
Gastrointestinal side effects like bloating, flatulence, and abdominal discomfort can occur but are uncommon. Rare cases of serious infections (bacteremia, sepsis) have been reported, almost always in critically ill or severely immunocompromised patients — not in otherwise healthy people.
For pregnancy, these ingredients are rated possibly safe, but data are limited; talk with your doctor before using this supplement while pregnant or breastfeeding.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
If you take antibiotic drugs, separate them from this product by several hours — antibiotics will kill the live organisms in these probiotics and reduce their effectiveness. Check your specific antibiotics with your doctor or pharmacist before using this supplement together with them.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with some supporting evidence for its stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
This is a multi-strain probiotic aimed at digestive support, and the evidence is strongest for IBS and antibiotic-associated diarrhea. The main thing to watch is timing: if you're on antibiotics, space them several hours apart from this product so the antibiotic doesn't kill the beneficial bacteria you're taking.
People with weakened immune systems should check with their doctor first. Run your exact medications through the checker on this page, then confirm with your own doctor or pharmacist before you start.

Pro-Bio Chewable Wafers by Kirkman Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Pro-Bio Chewable Wafers by Kirkman contains probiotics — Lactobacillus acidophilus, Bifidobacterium bifidum, and Streptococcus thermophilus — that interact with antibiotic drugs.
The most serious concern is Moderate: taking these probiotics at the same time as antibiotics might kill off the live organisms in the supplement, making the probiotic less effective. Since antibiotic drugs are meant to kill bacteria, they don't discriminate between harmful bacteria and the beneficial ones in your supplement.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
The interaction affects both L. acidophilus and B. bifidum when used together with antibiotics. To get the most out of both your antibiotic and this probiotic, space them out — ask your doctor or pharmacist how many hours apart to take them.
We could not check interactions for Lactobacillus rhamnosus, Lactobacillus plantarum, and Lactobacillus casei, so we can't rule out interactions with those ingredients. Altogether, these interactions span 182 individual medications.

Lactobacillus acidophilus
Antibiotic Drugs
Theoretically, taking Lactobacillus acidophilus with antibiotic drugs might decrease the effectiveness of L. acidophilus.
L. acidophilus preparations usually contain live and active organisms. Therefore, simultaneously taking antibiotics might kill a significant number of the organisms. Tell patients to separate administration of antibiotics and L. acidophilus preparations by at least two hours.
Bifidobacterium bifidum
Antibiotic Drugs
Theoretically, taking Bifidobacterium. bifidum with antibiotic drugs might decrease the effectiveness of B. bifidum.
Since B. bifidum preparations usually contain live and active organisms, simultaneously taking antibiotics might kill a significant number of the organisms. Tell patients to separate administration of antibiotics and B. bifidum preparations by at least 2 hours.
