Probiotic Acidophilus Ingredients & Drug Interactions
What is this page for?
First and foremost: checking Probiotic Acidophilus against your medications. The heart of this page is the interaction checker and the full interaction report — how this product’s ingredients may interact with prescription and over-the-counter medicines you may be taking.
Around that, we add a pharmacist’s high-level view of the product as a whole — what’s inside, the evidence for its stated use, how transparent the label is, and what safety data exists — so you can see the full picture in one place. It’s educational information from our licensed clinical databases and the clinical staff at HelloPharmacist — not medical advice — and we don’t sell or endorse products. Our editorial policy

HelloPharmacist Scorecard of Probiotic Acidophilus by Puritan's Pride
Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Low disclosure
This probiotic contains 4 active ingredients: three species of Lactobacillus (bulgaricus, acidophilus, and salivarius) and one Bifidobacterium (bifidum), all strains of beneficial bacteria. Two of them are listed individually; two come as part of a proprietary blend.
The capsule itself uses cellulose, gelatin, calcium silicate, and magnesium stearate as inactive ingredients — the standard fillers and binders that hold it together.
Does it work?
Moderate evidence
Lactobacillus acidophilus is possibly effective for irritable bowel syndrome, Helicobacter pylori infection, antibiotic-associated diarrhea, and bacterial vaginosis, though evidence isn't conclusive. It's rated possibly ineffective for atopic disease and has insufficient evidence for acute respiratory distress syndrome.
Bifidobacterium bifidum is possibly effective for irritable bowel syndrome and respiratory tract infections, but evidence is insufficient for hay fever, Alzheimer disease, and generalized anxiety disorder. We don't have effectiveness data on file for the other two Lactobacillus strains in the blend.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Lactobacillus acidophilus and Bifidobacterium bifidum are both generally well tolerated in healthy people. Oral doses can occasionally cause stomach discomfort, gas, bloating, or diarrhea, though these events are uncommon.
Because these are live organisms, there's a theoretical risk of infection in people with very weak immune systems — check with your doctor before starting if that applies to you. Rare cases of serious infection have been reported in medical literature, mostly in critically ill patients.
Both ingredients are rated possibly safe in pregnancy, though lactation data aren't on file.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
ANTIBIOTIC DRUGS (Moderate): These can reduce how well the probiotics work. Separate your antibiotic dose from this supplement by at least 2 to 3 hours — ask your doctor or pharmacist for the right schedule for your specific antibiotic.
We couldn't check two of the ingredients in this product, so check the medication tool on this page for your exact prescriptions.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFormula with limited ingredient disclosure with some supporting evidence behind its ingredients' uses. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
This probiotic may help with certain digestive issues or infections if the evidence applies to your situation — talk that over with your doctor. The big thing to watch is timing if you take antibiotics: they'll interfere with each other.
People with compromised immune systems should check with their doctor first. Run your medications through the tool on this page or ask your pharmacist before you start.

Probiotic Acidophilus by Puritan's Pride Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Probiotic Acidophilus by Puritan's Pride interacts with antibiotic drugs through its Lactobacillus acidophilus and Bifidobacterium bifidum content.
Both are live microorganisms, and taking them together with antibiotics may reduce how well the probiotics work — the antibiotics can kill off the live organisms before they're absorbed. Altogether, these interactions span 182 individual medications.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
The main concern is antibiotic drugs (a Moderate severity interaction). If you're on an antibiotic, separate doses: take your antibiotic and this probiotic at least 2 to 3 hours apart, or ask your doctor or pharmacist for specific timing guidance for your medication.
We couldn't check two of the four ingredients in this blend — Lactobacillus bulgaricus LB-87 and Lactobacillus salivarius LS-33 — so interactions with those aren't on file. Use the medication checker on this page to run your exact prescriptions against the product before starting.
