Lactobacillus acidophilus is generally well tolerated in healthy adults and children. The most common side effects from probiotic combinations are mild gastrointestinal effects — epigastric discomfort, abdominal pain, bloating, flatulence, and diarrhea — but these are uncommon.

In rare cases, live probiotic organisms have been found in serious infections like bacteremia or endocarditis, though this typically occurs when bacteria translocate from areas where they already exist in the body. One trial reported rash and itching, though it's unclear if L. acidophilus was the cause.

Antibiotic Drugs

Theoretically, taking Lactobacillus acidophilus with antibiotic drugs might decrease the effectiveness of L. acidophilus.
L. acidophilus preparations usually contain live and active organisms. Therefore, simultaneously taking antibiotics might kill a significant number of the organisms. Tell patients to separate administration of antibiotics and L. acidophilus preparations by at least two hours.
