Propolis is generally well tolerated when taken by mouth or applied to skin in the short term. The most common side effect orally is headache — about 7% of people taking 250 mg twice daily reported mild headache in one trial.

Topically, some people develop contact dermatitis (skin irritation) or contact cheilitis (lip irritation), especially if they're sensitive. Allergic reactions are possible, particularly in people allergic to bees or bee products.

During pregnancy, there isn't enough reliable safety information, so it's best avoided. While breastfeeding, there's some evidence suggesting it may be possibly safe, but the data is limited.

Anticoagulant/Antiplatelet Drugs

Theoretically, propolis might increase the risk of bleeding when taken with antiplatelet or anticoagulant drugs.
In vitro research shows that propolis water extract and the propolis constituent, caffeic acid phenethyl ester, can inhibit platelet aggregation. Additionally, evidence from an animal model shows that taking propolis in addition to warfarin decreases INR, suggesting that propolis can decrease the effectiveness of warfarin.
