What’s inside

Low disclosure
Ingredient Transparency · database check
Low

Most active ingredients don't disclose an individual amount — you can't tell how much of each you're getting.

Why this rating?
  • The label discloses an exact amount for 0 of its 3 active ingredients.
  • “Blend of Probiotic Bacteria” is a proprietary blend — the label doesn't break down how much of each component you get.

ProtoDophilus Woman 20 Billion delivers three live probiotic bacterial strains in each capsule: Lactobacillus acidophilus La-14, Bifidobacterium animalis lactis HN019, and Lactobacillus rhamnosus HN001. These are the active ingredients — the ones meant to support your gut health.

The capsule also contains microcrystalline cellulose, hypromellose, magnesium stearate, and silicon dioxide, which are inactive ingredients used to hold the formula together.

Does it work?

Moderate evidence
Evidence for Intended Use · database check
By FDA rules, dietary supplements can’t claim to treat, cure, or prevent disease — so labels speak in careful marketing language. We discern each product’s intended use from its name, label claims, and label statements, then grade the clinical evidence for that use. How these ratings are computed
Moderate

Some clinical evidence supports this product's ingredients for its stated purpose, but it isn't conclusive.

Why this rating?
  • The label markets this product for: supports vaginal health and reduces bloating.
  • We looked for evidence on: Bacterial vaginosis, Vaginal candidiasis, Antibiotic-associated diarrhea, Lactose intolerance, Urogenital health, Digestive comfort — and 1 related terms.
  • The strongest evidence on file: Lactobacillus Acidophilus is rated "Possibly Effective" for Antibiotic-associated diarrhea (Natural Medicines).
  • Also on file: Lactobacillus Acidophilus is rated "Possibly Effective" for Bacterial vaginosis.
  • Also on file: Lactobacillus Acidophilus is rated "Insufficient Reliable Evidence To Rate" for Lactose intolerance, Vaginal candidiasis.

The evidence for Lactobacillus acidophilus La-14 — one of the three strains in this product — shows it may help with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), Helicobacter pylori infection, antibiotic-associated diarrhea, and bacterial vaginosis. For the other two strains in this blend, we don't hold effectiveness ratings in our data.

Since this is a combination product, the overall benefit depends on all three strains working together, and we have limited data on how the blend performs as a whole.

How safe is it?

Well-documented data
Safety Information · database check
Well characterized

Adverse-effect, pregnancy, and general safety data are on file for most of these ingredients.

Why this rating?
  • We hold adverse-effect (side-effect) data for 1 of the 1 matched ingredient.
  • Pregnancy & breastfeeding safety ratings cover 1 of 1.
  • General safety write-ups exist for 1 of 1.
  • Remember: this measures how much safety information exists. Thin data is not the same as being safe.

Lactobacillus acidophilus is generally well tolerated in healthy adults and children. That said, since it contains live microorganisms, there's some theoretical concern about infection in certain patients — though most documented cases involve people with serious underlying conditions.

Oral use may occasionally cause mild gastrointestinal side effects like bloating, gas, abdominal discomfort, or diarrhea, but these are uncommon. Because the data are limited, check with your doctor or pharmacist before starting, especially if you have a compromised immune system or serious illness.

The most serious documented interaction for these ingredients is Moderate. Check your medications for a personalized result.

Why this rating?
  • 1 of the 1 matched ingredient can interact with medications — Lactobacillus Acidophilus.
  • The most serious interaction on file is rated Moderate.
  • For scale: 182 individual medications appear in the full list. A big number alone doesn't make a product dangerous — what matters is whether YOUR medication is on it, so run yours through the interaction checker on this page.

Before you take ProtoDophilus Woman 20 Billion, check your antibiotic medications using the tool on this page. Antibiotics are the main documented concern — they can reduce the effectiveness of the Lactobacillus acidophilus in the product.

For the other two probiotic strains, we don't hold interaction data yet, so running through your full medication list is especially important.

The bottom line

Scorecard at a glanceFormula with limited ingredient disclosure with some supporting evidence for its stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.

This probiotic blend may be worth considering if you're dealing with IBS, diarrhea after antibiotics, or certain bacterial infections — the evidence for at least one strain is encouraging. If you take antibiotics, space them out from this product so the pills don't interfere with each other.

Antibiotic Drugs

Theoretically, taking Lactobacillus acidophilus with antibiotic drugs might decrease the effectiveness of L. acidophilus.
L. acidophilus preparations usually contain live and active organisms. Therefore, simultaneously taking antibiotics might kill a significant number of the organisms. Tell patients to separate administration of antibiotics and L. acidophilus preparations by at least two hours.

ProtoDophilus Woman 20 Billion by Protocol For Life Balance: Common Questions

Does ProtoDophilus Woman 20 Billion by Protocol For Life Balance interact with any medications?
Yes. Based on its ingredients, ProtoDophilus Woman 20 Billion has a known interaction with 182 medications. Use the checker to see how it interacts with a specific drug.
How can one product interact with so many drugs?
ProtoDophilus Woman 20 Billion contains 3 active ingredients, and an interaction can come from any of them. We check every ingredient, combine the results into one list per medication, and show which ingredient and mechanism is responsible.
Where does this information come from?
The product label data comes from the NIH Dietary Supplement Label Database (DSLD); the interaction data is built on the Natural Medicines database and reviewed by HelloPharmacist pharmacists.
Can I take this while I'm on antibiotics?
You can, but timing matters. Antibiotics can kill the live bacteria in this supplement, making it less effective. Try to take them a few hours apart — ask your pharmacist for the best spacing for your specific antibiotic.
What's the difference between the three bacterial strains in here?
Each strain may support your gut in slightly different ways. Lactobacillus acidophilus has the most research behind it for IBS, antibiotic-associated diarrhea, and related issues. We don't have specific effectiveness data on the other two strains in this product.
Will this give me side effects?
Most people tolerate it well, but some experience mild bloating, gas, or loose stools — these are uncommon and usually temporary. Since it contains live organisms, people with very weak immune systems should check with their doctor first.
Is this safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding?
We don't have pregnancy or breastfeeding safety data on file for any of the strains in this product. Talk to your doctor or midwife before taking it while pregnant or nursing.
How many active ingredients are in this?
Three: Lactobacillus acidophilus La-14, Bifidobacterium animalis lactis HN019, and Lactobacillus rhamnosus HN001. The rest of what's in the capsule is inactive — just fillers and binders.
Does this actually work?
For Lactobacillus acidophilus, the evidence suggests it may help with IBS, antibiotic-associated diarrhea, and a couple of other issues. The evidence is encouraging but not definitive. We don't have established effectiveness data for the other two strains.
