Phosphatidylserine is rated possibly effective for age-related cognitive decline and Alzheimer disease based on available evidence. For athletic performance, attention deficit-hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), general cognitive function, and dementia, the evidence isn't established — we don't have enough reliable data to know whether it works for those uses.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Phosphatidylserine is generally well tolerated in studies, though long-term safety isn't fully established. The most common side effects reported orally are flatulence, gastrointestinal upset, headache, insomnia, and nausea.
Gastrointestinal upset can occur at doses of 200–300 mg/day, and insomnia is more likely at higher doses around 600 mg. There isn't enough safety information to recommend use during pregnancy, so it's best to avoid it.
Safety while breastfeeding is also unknown, so avoidance is recommended. If you're pregnant, planning pregnancy, or breastfeeding, talk with your pharmacist or doctor before taking this product.
