Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Full disclosure
Recancostat Powder contains three active ingredients: L-cysteine, L-glutathione, and AnthoRedoxin. L-cysteine is an amino acid that supports your body's antioxidant systems.
L-glutathione is another amino acid compound that plays a role in cellular defense. The product also contains silicon dioxide as an inactive ingredient (a common flow agent in powders).
Does it work?
Moderate evidence
The evidence we hold doesn't establish that L-cysteine works for hair loss, leg ulcers, hangovers, stroke, or gastritis — the ratings are insufficient. L-glutathione shows possibly effective evidence for one use: reducing nerve damage (neurotoxicity) from the cancer drug cisplatin.
For other uses listed — fatty liver disease, Alzheimer's disease, athletic performance, and cataracts — the evidence is insufficient to rate it. The effectiveness data on AnthoRedoxin isn't on file.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
L-cysteine is generally well tolerated at food amounts, but the safety of high-dose supplements over time isn't well studied, so caution is advised at supplement doses. L-glutathione appears generally well tolerated short-term by mouth, but long-term safety data is limited.
If inhaled as a mist, glutathione can cause airway narrowing and shortness of breath in people with asthma. During pregnancy, L-glutathione safety data is insufficient — avoid it unless your doctor advises otherwise.
During breastfeeding, the same caution and avoidance apply. L-cysteine is rated likely safe in pregnancy.
We hold no pregnancy or breastfeeding data for AnthoRedoxin.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Before taking Recancostat, double-check with your doctor or pharmacist if you take antidiabetes drugs (blood sugar medications) — L-cysteine may increase the risk of low blood sugar. No other medication interactions are documented for the ingredients we could check, but we hold no interaction data for AnthoRedoxin.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with some supporting evidence behind its ingredients' uses. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
Recancostat may be worth considering if you're exploring support for cisplatin-related nerve damage under your doctor's care, though evidence for most other uses is thin. If you take any diabetes medication, check with your doctor or pharmacist before starting, because L-cysteine might lower your blood sugar.
Pregnant or breastfeeding people should talk with their doctor first, especially about L-glutathione. Your own healthcare provider is the right person to confirm whether this product fits your situation.
