Evidence for Intended Use · database check
By FDA rules, dietary supplements can’t claim to treat, cure, or prevent disease — so labels speak in careful marketing language. We discern each product’s intended use from its name, label claims, and label statements, then grade the clinical evidence for that use. How these ratings are computed
Not assessable

This is a single-ingredient Red Raspberry product and its label doesn't state a use — see Red Raspberry's own graded uses on its monograph.

Why this rating?
  • We looked at the product name, claims, and label statements and couldn't find a stated purpose to grade.

The evidence for red raspberry's effectiveness is not established in the data we hold. The product has been studied for aging skin, heart disease, respiratory infections, heart failure, and blood sugar control, but none of these uses have sufficient reliable evidence to confirm it works.

If you're considering this for a specific health goal, talk it over with your doctor or pharmacist.

How safe is it?

Well-documented data
Safety Information · database check
Well characterized

Adverse-effect, pregnancy, and general safety data are on file for most of these ingredients.

Why this rating?
  • We hold adverse-effect (side-effect) data for 1 of the 1 matched ingredient.
  • Pregnancy & breastfeeding safety ratings cover 1 of 1.
  • General safety write-ups exist for 1 of 1.
  • Remember: this measures how much safety information exists. Thin data is not the same as being safe.

Red raspberry fruit is generally well tolerated, though the safety data on red raspberry leaf specifically is limited. The most common side effects—diarrhea, stomach upset, and upper abdominal pain—are uncommon at typical doses.

One occupational case of asthma (wheezing and shortness of breath) was reported from inhaling red raspberry powder, not from taking it by mouth. Red raspberry is rated likely safe or possibly safe in late pregnancy, but the safety data isn't well established—use it only with your doctor's guidance if you're pregnant.

There isn't enough information to know if it's safe while breastfeeding. Talk with your doctor or pharmacist about your individual situation.

Why this rating?
  • 1 of the 1 matched ingredient can interact with medications — Red Raspberry.
  • The most serious interaction on file is rated Moderate.
  • Some involve high-stakes drug classes: anticoagulant / antiplatelet drugs; diabetes medications.
  • For scale: 135 individual medications appear in the full list. A big number alone doesn't make a product dangerous — what matters is whether YOUR medication is on it, so run yours through the interaction checker on this page.

Before taking this product, check with your doctor or pharmacist if you take blood thinners or antiplatelet drugs (such as warfarin, aspirin, or clopidogrel)—red raspberry may increase bleeding risk. Also double-check if you're on insulin or other diabetes medications, since red raspberry may lower blood sugar levels.

These are the two medication types with documented interactions in our data.

The bottom line

Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with no assessable stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.

Red raspberry leaf is commonly used as a herbal tea or extract, but the evidence for how well it works isn't clear from the data we hold. The main caution is with blood thinners, antiplatelet drugs, and insulin—it may strengthen the blood-thinning effect or lower blood sugar.

If you take any of these medications or have questions about whether it's right for you, check with your doctor or pharmacist before starting.

Anticoagulant/Antiplatelet Drugs

Theoretically, taking red raspberry leaf with anticoagulant/antiplatelet drugs might increase the risk of bleeding.
In vitro research suggests that red raspberry leaf extract has antiplatelet activity and enhances the in vitro effects of the antiplatelet medication cangrelor. This interaction has not been reported in humans.

Likelihood Possible Evidence D
Insulin

Red raspberry leaf might reduce glucose levels in patients being treated with insulin.
In one case report, a 38-year-old patient with gestational diabetes, whose blood glucose was being controlled with medical nutrition therapy and insulin, developed hypoglycemia after consuming two servings of raspberry leaf tea daily for 3 days beginning at 32 weeks' gestation. The patient required an insulin dose reduction. The hypoglycemia was considered to be probably related to use of red raspberry leaf tea.
