HelloPharmacist Scorecard of Rhodiola 500 mg by Eclectic Herb
Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product contains one active ingredient: rhodiola 500 mg per capsule. Rhodiola is a plant extract used traditionally as an adaptogen — a substance believed to help the body manage stress.
The capsule also contains hypromellose, an inactive ingredient that forms the capsule shell.
Does it work?
Not established
The evidence on rhodiola isn't established in our data for the conditions listed — altitude sickness, generalized anxiety disorder, arrhythmia, athletic performance, and bladder cancer all carry a rating of insufficient reliable evidence. That means there isn't enough high-quality research yet to say whether it works for these uses.
Talk with your pharmacist or doctor about whether it makes sense for what you're considering it for.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Rhodiola is generally well tolerated for short-term use, but long-term safety hasn't been well studied, so we don't have good data on taking it for extended periods. The most common side effects are dizziness and changes in saliva production — either dry mouth or excessive saliva.
Because there isn't enough safety data, rhodiola should be avoided during pregnancy and while breastfeeding. If you're pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or nursing, talk with your pharmacist or doctor before taking it.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Before you take Rhodiola 500 mg, double-check if you're on blood pressure-lowering medications (antihypertensives) — there's a moderate risk of your pressure dropping too low. Also check for CYP2C9 substrates, especially losartan (Cozaar), as well as blood sugar-lowering drugs (antidiabetes medications), immunosuppressants, P-glycoprotein substrates, and drugs broken down by CYP1A2 and CYP3A4.
Use the medication search tool below to confirm your exact drugs.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with no established evidence rating for its marketed use. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
Rhodiola is generally well tolerated for short-term use if you're healthy and not on blood pressure medications, blood thinners, or drugs metabolized through CYP2C9. If you take any prescription or over-the-counter medications, check them against our interaction tool below — this product touches a lot of drug types.

Rhodiola 500 mg by Eclectic Herb Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Rhodiola 500 mg by Eclectic Herb does interact with a number of medications.
The most serious concern is with blood pressure-lowering drugs (antihypertensives). Rhodiola may lower blood pressure on its own, so combining it with these medications could push your pressure too low.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
Rhodiola also affects how your body metabolizes several types of drugs. It can slow the breakdown of medications processed through your liver's CYP2C9 pathway — including losartan (Cozaar), a common blood pressure medication — which may raise their levels in your blood.
It has similar but less serious effects on drugs metabolized through CYP1A2 and CYP3A4 pathways. Additionally, rhodiola may increase levels of P-glycoprotein substrates, a group of drugs your body normally pumps out; it can also theoretically interfere with blood sugar-lowering drugs (antidiabetes medications) and immunosuppressants.
Altogether, these interactions span 1,253 individual medications. Before you start rhodiola, use the medication checker on this page to look up any prescriptions or over-the-counter drugs you're taking.

Rhodiola
Antidiabetes Drugs
Theoretically, taking rhodiola with antidiabetes drugs might increase the risk of hypoglycemia.
In vitro and animal research shows that rhodiola extract can decrease blood glucose due to alpha-glucosidase activity.
Antihypertensive Drugs
Theoretically, taking rhodiola with antihypertensive drugs might increase the risk of hypotension.
In vitro and animal research shows that rhodiola extract inhibits angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) and might lower blood pressure.
Cytochrome P450 2C9 (Cyp2C9) Substrates
Theoretically, rhodiola might increase levels of drugs metabolized by CYP2C9.
In vitro research shows that rhodiola inhibits CYP2C9. This effect is highly variable and appears to be dependent on the rhodiola product studied. Also, a clinical study in healthy young males found that taking rhodiola extract 290 mg daily for 14 days reduces the metabolism of losartan, a CYP2C9 substrate, by 21% after 4 hours.
Immunosuppressants
Theoretically, rhodiola use might interfere with immunosuppressive therapy.
In vitro and animal research show that rhodiola has immunostimulatory effects.
Losartan (Cozaar)
Rhodiola might increase the levels and adverse effects of losartan.
A clinical study in healthy young males found that taking rhodiola extract 290 mg daily for 14 days reduces the metabolism of losartan, a CYP2C9 substrate, by 21% after 4 hours.
P-Glycoprotein Substrates
Theoretically, rhodiola might increase levels of P-glycoprotein substrates.
In vitro research shows that rhodiola inhibits P-glycoprotein. Theoretically, using rhodiola with P-glycoprotein substrates might increase drug levels and potentially increase the risk of adverse effects.
Antidepressant Drugs
Theoretically, rhodiola might increase the risk of adverse effects when taken with antidepressants.
A review of adverse event reports in Poland identified cases of tachyarrhythmias, myalgia, arthralgia, gum pain, restless leg syndrome, swallowing disorders, and changes in consciousness when rhodiola was taken in combination with paroxetine, escitalopram, fluoxetine, sertraline, trazodone, and/or duloxetine.
Cns Depressants
Theoretically, rhodiola might increase the risk of adverse effects when taken with CNS depressants.
A review of adverse event reports in Poland identified cases of excessive sedation, myoclonus, hypotension, and hallucinations when rhodiola was taken with haloperidol, diazepam, or alprazolam.
Cytochrome P450 1A2 (Cyp1A2) Substrates
Theoretically, rhodiola might increase levels of drugs metabolized by CYP1A2.
In vitro research shows that rhodiola inhibits CYP1A2. This effect is highly variable and appears to be dependent on the rhodiola product studied. However, a clinical study in healthy young males found that taking rhodiola extract 290 mg daily for 14 days does not inhibit the metabolism of caffeine, a CYP1A2 substrate.
Cytochrome P450 3A4 (Cyp3A4) Substrates
Theoretically, rhodiola might increase levels of drugs metabolized by CYP3A4.
In vitro research shows that rhodiola inhibits CYP3A4. This effect is highly variable and appears to be dependent on the rhodiola product studied. However, a clinical study in healthy young males found that taking rhodiola extract 290 mg daily for 14 days does not inhibit the metabolism of midazolam, a CYP3A4 substrate.
