Ribose Ingredients & Drug Interactions
What is this page for?
First and foremost: checking Ribose against your medications. The heart of this page is the interaction checker and the full interaction report — how this product’s ingredients may interact with prescription and over-the-counter medicines you may be taking.
Around that, we add a pharmacist’s high-level view of the product as a whole — what’s inside, the evidence for its stated use, how transparent the label is, and what safety data exists — so you can see the full picture in one place. It’s educational information from our licensed clinical databases and the clinical staff at HelloPharmacist — not medical advice — and we don’t sell or endorse products. Our editorial policy

Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product contains a single active ingredient: D-Ribose, a naturally occurring sugar your cells use to make energy. It's supplied as a powder.
Does it work?
Couldn't assess
The evidence for ribose is limited. It's rated possibly ineffective for athletic performance and McArdle disease.
For restless legs syndrome, heart failure, muscle soreness, and recovery after coronary artery bypass graft surgery, there isn't enough reliable evidence yet to say whether it works or doesn't.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Ribose is generally well tolerated for short-term use — up to about a month — but long-term safety hasn't been well studied. Common side effects from the oral powder include diarrhea, gastrointestinal discomfort, headache, nausea, and low blood sugar.
A small number of people have reported anxiety, lightheadedness, or increased appetite; lowering the dose resolved these in some cases. Because ribose lowers blood sugar, use caution if you're already at risk for low blood sugar.
The safety data advises against ribose during pregnancy and while breastfeeding — there isn't enough information to know it's safe in those situations. Talk with your doctor or pharmacist for personalized advice if you're pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or nursing.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Before taking this product, check with your doctor or pharmacist if you take insulin or any antidiabetes drug — both carry a Moderate risk of low blood sugar when combined with ribose. If you're on any other medications, use the interaction checker on this page to look up your exact drugs.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with no assessable stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
Ribose may be considered by people looking to support energy production or muscle recovery, but the evidence for most of those uses is weak or absent. The main caution is its effect on blood sugar — if you take diabetes medications or insulin, you'll need to check with your doctor or pharmacist first.
Pregnant and nursing individuals should also talk it over with their healthcare provider before starting.

HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Pure Encapsulations Ribose contains D-Ribose, which interacts with antidiabetes drugs and insulin — both at Moderate severity.
The main concern is low blood sugar (hypoglycemia). Ribose lowers blood glucose levels in a dose-dependent way, and combining it with diabetes medications or insulin could push blood sugar too low.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
If you take insulin or any medication to control blood sugar — whether that's metformin, sulfonylureas, GLP-1 drugs, or any other class — you'll want to flag this product with your doctor or pharmacist before starting it. They may need to monitor your blood sugar more closely or adjust your medication dose.
Additionally, for any other medications you're on, run them through the interaction checker below. Altogether, these interactions span 86 individual medications.
