Royal jelly is generally well tolerated in most people. However, it can trigger serious allergic reactions in those with a history of asthma or atopy (a tendency toward allergies).

Common allergic side effects include itching, hives, eczema, difficulty breathing, and oral allergy syndrome. Rare but serious reactions include anaphylaxis and life-threatening airway constriction (status asthmaticus).

There's also one case report of severe inflammation in the colon with bloody diarrhea after taking royal jelly, though symptoms resolved after stopping it. There isn't enough safety information to recommend royal jelly during pregnancy or while breastfeeding.
