HelloPharmacist Scorecard of Standardized Saffron Extract 88.5 mg by Only Natural
Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product contains one active ingredient: saffron extract, standardized to 88.5 mg per capsule. Saffron is the dried stigma (the female part) of the crocus flower, traditionally used in cooking and herbal medicine.
The capsule itself is made from vegetable cellulose, with silicon dioxide and vegetable stearate as inactive ingredients to keep everything stable and flowing smoothly.
Does it work?
Couldn't assess
Our data shows saffron extract is possibly effective for chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy (nerve damage from cancer treatment) and Alzheimer disease. That means there's some clinical evidence supporting its use for these conditions, but the evidence isn't yet conclusive.
For other uses, effectiveness ratings aren't established in our data.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Saffron extract is generally well tolerated when taken by mouth. The most common side effects are gastrointestinal complaints, nausea, sedation, and vomiting.
Serious allergic reactions, including anaphylaxis, are rare but have been reported — and they can happen within minutes. At higher doses (30 mg twice daily for extended periods), saffron has been associated with anxiety and mood changes like hypomania in clinical trials, though at lower daily doses this didn't occur more than placebo.
Saffron should be avoided during pregnancy — the safety data advises against medicinal or supplement amounts because saffron may stimulate the uterus. For breastfeeding, there isn't enough reliable safety information, so talk with your doctor or pharmacist about whether it's right for you.
Remember that supplement doses carry more risk than the small amounts used in cooking.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Before you start this saffron extract, double-check with your doctor or pharmacist if you take CNS depressants (sedatives, sleeping pills, anti-anxiety drugs — the most serious concern), blood pressure medications, diabetes drugs, or caffeine-containing products. Saffron can add to the effects of these medications in ways that may need dose adjustment or closer monitoring.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with no assessable stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
Saffron extract may be worth considering if you're exploring options for chemotherapy-related nerve pain or Alzheimer disease, but it's not a replacement for your regular treatment plan. Be cautious if you take sedatives, blood pressure pills, diabetes medications, or caffeine — and avoid it if you're pregnant.
Talk with your doctor or pharmacist about whether this product fits your situation and medications.

Through its saffron extract content, it may have additive sedative effects when combined with CNS depressants (like sedatives and sleep aids) — the most serious concern documented. Saffron extract
Antidiabetes Drugs
Theoretically, concomitant use of saffron with antidiabetes drugs might increase the risk of hypoglycemia.
Some clinical research shows that taking saffron extract reduces fasting levels of glucose when used in addition to hypoglycemic agents. However, saffron powder itself has not been shown to reduce fasting glucose levels.
Antihypertensive Drugs
Theoretically, concomitant use of saffron with antihypertensive drugs might have additive effects.
Animal and human research suggests that saffron extract can decrease blood pressure.
Caffeine
Theoretically, saffron might inhibit the metabolism of caffeine.
A small clinical study suggests that taking saffron powder 300 mg in 150 mL water daily for 5 days and then taking caffeine 200 mg seems to reduce caffeine metabolite levels in the saliva and urine in males, but not females. Theoretically, this may be due to the inhibition of cytochrome P450 1A2 by saffron.
Cns Depressants
Theoretically, concomitant use of saffron and CNS depressants might have additive sedative effects.
Clinical research shows that taking saffron extract 60 mg orally daily for 26 weeks can cause drowsiness and sedation. Animal research suggests that adding saffron to hexobarbital further increases sleeping and slows motor activity.
