Saffron and Caffeine (prescription drug)

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

CAFFEINE

Theoretically, saffron might inhibit the metabolism of caffeine.
A small clinical study suggests that taking saffron powder 300 mg in 150 mL water daily for 5 days and then taking caffeine 200 mg seems to reduce caffeine metabolite levels in the saliva and urine in males, but not females. Theoretically, this may be due to the inhibition of cytochrome P450 1A2 by saffron.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence B

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the gist: your body clears caffeine mainly through a liver enzyme called CYP1A2. Saffron seems to slow that enzyme down a bit, which means caffeine can hang around longer and build up. In one small study, men who took saffron daily for five days had lower caffeine breakdown products afterward, hinting their bodies were processing it more slowly. Interestingly, that effect wasn't seen in the women studied.

What does that mean for you? With caffeine lingering, you might feel its usual effects more strongly: jitteriness, a racing heart, trouble sleeping, or feeling wired. This is still early, theory-leaning evidence, so don't panic. A pinch of saffron in cooking is unlikely to matter, but concentrated supplements could. Chat with your pharmacist or doctor before pairing the two.

About Saffron

What is Saffron?

Saffron
  • Depression and low mood
  • Anxiety
  • PMS symptoms
  • Memory and cognition
  • Eye health (age-related macular degeneration)

Saffron is a costly spice that has shown promise in early studies for mild-to-moderate depression and some mood and PMS symptoms, but most research uses small trials, so results are not definitive. It is generally well tolerated in food and small supplement amounts, but high doses can be harmful and it should be avoided in pregnancy. Talk to your pharmacist or doctor before using saffron supplements.

About Caffeine

What Is Caffeine Used For?

Brand names: Dextrophin, Caffeine

Caffeine citrate injection and oral solution are used for the short-term treatment of apnea of prematurity. This means pauses in breathing in premature infants. The label lists the age range as infants between 28 weeks and a later gestational age, and that range is cut off in the text provided.

Over-the-counter caffeine tablets, such as Diurex and the Stay Awake products, are taken by mouth by adults and older children. Their labels point to fatigue and drowsiness. Diurex directions also mention taking it while symptoms persist.
