Saffron + Topiramate
Topiramate brand names: Topamax, Trokendi XR, Qudexy XR, Eprontia.
Saffron has a moderate interaction with Topiramate. Theoretically, concomitant use of saffron and CNS depressants might have additive sedative effects.

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.
CNS DEPRESSANTS
Why this applies to Topiramate
Topiramate falls under CNS DEPRESSANTS — the group Saffron interacts with.
Clinical research shows that taking saffron extract 60 mg orally daily for 26 weeks can cause drowsiness and sedation. Animal research suggests that adding saffron to hexobarbital further increases sleeping and slows motor activity.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the gist with saffron and topiramate: both can have a calming, slowing effect on the brain. Topiramate already tends to cause drowsiness, foggy thinking, slowed reactions, and sometimes dizziness or trouble concentrating. Saffron, especially in concentrated supplement doses, has been linked to sedation too. Put them together and those mellow effects could stack up, leaving you sleepier or more spaced out than usual.
I want to be honest about the strength of this one. It's theoretical, based on how these two behave rather than strong human studies, and the severity is moderate. A pinch of saffron in your cooking almost certainly won't matter. If you're considering a saffron supplement, just run it by your pharmacist or doctor first, and notice how alert you feel before driving.

About Saffron
What is Saffron?
- Depression and low mood
- Anxiety
- PMS symptoms
- Memory and cognition
- Eye health (age-related macular degeneration)
Saffron is a costly spice that has shown promise in early studies for mild-to-moderate depression and some mood and PMS symptoms, but most research uses small trials, so results are not definitive. It is generally well tolerated in food and small supplement amounts, but high doses can be harmful and it should be avoided in pregnancy. Talk to your pharmacist or doctor before using saffron supplements.
About Topiramate
What Is Topiramate Used For?
Brand names: Topamax, Trokendi XR, Qudexy XR, Eprontia
-
Topiramate is used alone or with other medications to treat certain types of seizures including primary generalized tonic-clonic seizures (formerly known as a grand mal seizure; seizure that involves the entire body) and partial onset seizures (seizures that involve only one part of the brain). Topiramate is also used with other medications to control seizures in people who have Lennox-Gastaut syndrome (a disorder that causes seizures and developmental delays). Topiramate is also used to prevent migraine headaches but not to relieve the pain of migraine headaches when they occur. Topiramate is in a class of medications called anticonvulsants. It works by decreasing abnormal excitement in the brain.

Topiramate Is Linked to Lower Levels of One Nutrient
Natural Medicines records Topiramate as a medicine that can lower these. This is not an interaction with Saffron — it is a separate effect of the medicine, and it is a reason some people are advised to supplement rather than to avoid one:
