Here's the simple version: saffron taken as a concentrated supplement may gently lower blood pressure on its own. Since verapamil is already working to relax your blood vessels and bring your numbers down, stacking the two could add up and push your blood pressure lower than you want.

If that happens, you might feel lightheaded, dizzy, tired, or a bit faint when you stand up quickly. I want to be honest about the evidence though, this concern mostly comes from animal and lab studies, so it's more of a theoretical caution than a proven problem. The saffron you sprinkle in cooking is very unlikely to matter. If you're considering saffron capsules, just check in with your pharmacist or doctor first so they can keep an eye on your readings.

Saffron is a costly spice that has shown promise in early studies for mild-to-moderate depression and some mood and PMS symptoms, but most research uses small trials, so results are not definitive. It is generally well tolerated in food and small supplement amounts, but high doses can be harmful and it should be avoided in pregnancy. About Verapamil

What Is Verapamil Used For?

Brand names: Isoptin SR, Verelan, Isoptin, Calan SR, Verelan SR, Calan, Covera HS, Verap, Veramil

Verapamil tablets and film-coated tablets are used to treat angina — including vasospastic (Prinzmetal's) angina, unstable angina, and chronic stable angina — as well as certain abnormal heart rhythms (arrhythmias) and high blood pressure (essential hypertension). For arrhythmias, regular-release tablets are used alongside digoxin to control heart rate in atrial flutter or atrial fibrillation, and to help prevent episodes of paroxysmal supraventricular tachycardia (SVT), a type of rapid heartbeat.

Extended-release and sustained-release oral forms (tablets and capsules) are indicated specifically for high blood pressure. Verapamil hydrochloride injection is used in hospital settings for rapid conversion of SVT to normal rhythm and for temporary control of fast heart rates in atrial flutter or atrial fibrillation.
