Saffron and Clonazepam

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

CNS DEPRESSANTS

Why this applies to Clonazepam

Clonazepam falls under CNS DEPRESSANTS — the group Saffron interacts with.

Theoretically, concomitant use of saffron and CNS depressants might have additive sedative effects.
Clinical research shows that taking saffron extract 60 mg orally daily for 26 weeks can cause drowsiness and sedation. Animal research suggests that adding saffron to hexobarbital further increases sleeping and slows motor activity.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the simple version: clonazepam already calms down your nervous system, which is why it can make you feel drowsy or relaxed. Saffron, especially in concentrated supplement form, has shown a mild sedating effect of its own in some studies. Put the two together and those effects could potentially stack, leaving you feeling sleepier, foggier, or less steady on your feet than usual.

I want to be honest about how solid this is: this concern is theoretical, based mostly on how these things work and some animal research, not on strong human proof. The pinch of saffron you'd use in cooking almost certainly won't matter. Daily supplement doses are the real question. If you're thinking about a saffron supplement, just run it by your pharmacist or doctor first, and don't change your clonazepam on your own.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Clonazepam page

“Clonazepam (Klonopin) slows brain activity to control seizures and panic, and most of what interacts with it pushes in one of two directions: deepening that sedation or changing how much drug is in your blood. This is a list to approach carefully.”

About Saffron

What is Saffron?

Saffron
  • Depression and low mood
  • Anxiety
  • PMS symptoms
  • Memory and cognition
  • Eye health (age-related macular degeneration)

Saffron is a costly spice that has shown promise in early studies for mild-to-moderate depression and some mood and PMS symptoms, but most research uses small trials, so results are not definitive. It is generally well tolerated in food and small supplement amounts, but high doses can be harmful and it should be avoided in pregnancy. Talk to your pharmacist or doctor before using saffron supplements.
