Saffron and Caffeine , Sodium Benzoate

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

CAFFEINE

Theoretically, saffron might inhibit the metabolism of caffeine.
A small clinical study suggests that taking saffron powder 300 mg in 150 mL water daily for 5 days and then taking caffeine 200 mg seems to reduce caffeine metabolite levels in the saliva and urine in males, but not females. Theoretically, this may be due to the inhibition of cytochrome P450 1A2 by saffron.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence B

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the gist for caffeine and sodium benzoate, which is basically a caffeine product your body clears using a liver enzyme called CYP1A2. Saffron may slow that enzyme down a little. If caffeine is broken down more slowly, it can hang around longer, so the usual caffeine effects (jitteriness, a racing or pounding heart, trouble sleeping, or feeling wired) could feel stronger or last longer than you'd expect.

I want to be honest about how solid this is: it comes from one small study, and it mainly showed up in men, not women. Everyday culinary saffron in your rice or paella almost certainly won't matter. Concentrated saffron supplements taken daily are where I'd be more cautious. If you're using both, just give your pharmacist or doctor a heads up.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Caffeine , Sodium Benzoate page

“Caffeine and sodium benzoate is itself a stimulant medication, so the supplements most likely to cause trouble are the ones doing the same job. Seven of the 208 ingredients on file rate major, several of them stimulant herbs such as ephedra that can pile extra blood pressure and heart strain onto a drug already revving the nervous system.”

About Saffron

What is Saffron?

Saffron
  • Depression and low mood
  • Anxiety
  • PMS symptoms
  • Memory and cognition
  • Eye health (age-related macular degeneration)

Saffron is a costly spice that has shown promise in early studies for mild-to-moderate depression and some mood and PMS symptoms, but most research uses small trials, so results are not definitive. It is generally well tolerated in food and small supplement amounts, but high doses can be harmful and it should be avoided in pregnancy. Talk to your pharmacist or doctor before using saffron supplements.
