Stevia Ingredients & Drug Interactions
by Herbal Terra
What is this page for?
First and foremost: checking Stevia against your medications. The heart of this page is the interaction checker and the full interaction report — how this product’s ingredients may interact with prescription and over-the-counter medicines you may be taking.
Around that, we add a pharmacist’s high-level view of the product as a whole — what’s inside, the evidence for its stated use, how transparent the label is, and what safety data exists — so you can see the full picture in one place. It’s educational information from our licensed clinical databases and the clinical staff at HelloPharmacist — not medical advice — and we don’t sell or endorse products. Our editorial policy

Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product contains one active ingredient: certified organic stevia leaf liquid extract. Stevia is a plant-derived sweetener that's been used as a sugar substitute.
The extract is suspended in menstruum, an inactive processing solvent that helps deliver the stevia in liquid form.
Does it work?
Couldn't assess
The evidence for stevia's effectiveness isn't established in our data. We hold insufficient reliable evidence to rate it for blood sugar control, blood pressure, or weight management.
If you're looking for it as a sweetener, that's different from a medicinal claim — food-grade stevia is widely used for taste, but we can't speak to medical benefits from the research we hold.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Orally, stevia and its compounds are generally well tolerated in the amounts tested. Most people who report side effects — like mild bloating, dizziness, headache, muscle ache, nausea, or numbness — find they go away after the first week.
Allergic reactions are rare but possible. Because this is a whole-leaf supplement extract rather than purified stevia sweetener, safety data is limited.
The food industry has long-term data on purified stevia in typical eating amounts, but high-dose supplement forms haven't been as thoroughly studied, so use caution if you're taking this regularly.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Check your medications against stevia if you take lithium, blood pressure drugs, or diabetes medications. The lithium interaction is moderate-severity; the other two are minor but still worth confirming with your pharmacist or doctor before you start.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with no assessable stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
Stevia by Herbal Terra is a simple, single-ingredient sweetener liquid. If you take lithium, blood pressure medications, or diabetes drugs, run them through the checker on this page first — stevia may interact with those.
If you don't take any of those, you're probably fine, but remember that supplement-strength doses haven't been as well studied as food-grade stevia.

Stevia by Herbal Terra Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Herbal Terra Stevia is a single-ingredient liquid extract that does interact with a few medication types, so it's worth a quick check before you start.
The main concern is lithium (used for bipolar disorder). Stevia may have mild diuretic activity, which could reduce how much lithium your body clears, raising its level in your blood — that's a moderate-severity interaction and one your doctor needs to know about if you take lithium.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
Stevia also has minor interactions with blood pressure medications and diabetes drugs. On the blood pressure side, stevia might lower your pressure further, though the evidence is mixed — some research shows an effect and some doesn't.
With diabetes drugs, there's a theoretical risk of low blood sugar (hypoglycemia) if you combine them, though we don't have strong clinical proof of how often this happens in practice.
Additionally, we should mention that we hold no interaction data for the menstruum (a processing solvent used to make this liquid extract) — we could not check it. Use the medication checker on this page with your exact prescriptions to see if any of them fall into these categories.

certified organic Stevia (Stevia rebaudiana) dried leaf liquid extract
Lithium
Theoretically, stevia might decrease clearance and increase levels of lithium.
Animal research suggests that stevia extracts might have diuretic activity. Theoretically, increased reabsorption of lithium along with sodium might reduce excretion and increase levels of lithium.
Antidiabetes Drugs
Theoretically, stevia might increase the risk for hypoglycemia when combined with antidiabetes drugs.
Preliminary clinical research in patients with type 2 diabetes suggests that taking a single dose of stevia extract 1000 mg reduces postprandial blood glucose levels when taken with a meal. However, other clinical research in patients with type 1 or type 2 diabetes suggests that taking stevioside 250 mg three times daily does not significantly affect blood glucose levels or glycated hemoglobin (HbA1C) after three months of treatment.
Antihypertensive Drugs
Theoretically, combining stevia or stevia constituents with antihypertensive agents might increase the risk of hypotension.
Stevia extract and stevioside might lower blood pressure in patients with hypertension. However, other clinical research suggests that stevioside does not significantly lower blood pressure in patients with hypertension.
