Strength Gainz Tropical Punch contains 20 active ingredients including two forms of creatine (Creatine HCl and micronized Creatine Monohydrate), three branched-chain amino acids (L-Valine, L-Leucine, and L-Isoleucine), and several other amino acids and compounds designed to support muscle performance and recovery. The formula also includes a blend of mushroom extracts—Reishi, Shiitake, Cordyceps, Lion's Mane, Turkey Tail, and King Trumpet mushrooms—as well as D-Ribose for energy support and L-Theanine for cognitive focus.
The inactive ingredients include natural and artificial flavors, citric acid, sucralose, acesulfame potassium, and maltodextrin.
Does it work?
Moderate evidence
Creatine (both forms in this product) is possibly effective for muscle strength, athletic performance, and sarcopenia (age-related muscle loss), and possibly effective for certain cerebral creatine deficiency conditions. L-Lysine is possibly effective for cold sores.
L-Methionine is possibly effective for neural tube birth defects prevention. L-Theanine is possibly effective for cognitive function.
For most other ingredients—including the mushroom blends, D-Ribose, and the branched-chain amino acids—the evidence in our data is insufficient to establish whether they work, or in some cases they're rated possibly ineffective (such as Cordyceps for athletic performance and D-Ribose for athletic performance and McArdle disease). The effectiveness of L-Tryptophan and L-Phenylalanine for their associated claims is either insufficient or possibly ineffective according to our data.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Creatine is generally well tolerated in healthy adults but should be used carefully by anyone with kidney problems, as rare case reports have noted kidney issues. Most common side effects are dehydration, diarrhea, gastrointestinal upset, muscle cramps, and water retention.
L-Tryptophan is generally well tolerated but has a past safety scare—in 1989 a contaminated batch from a single Japanese manufacturer caused over 1,500 cases of a serious neurological condition (eosinophilia-myalgia syndrome, or EMS), though nearly all cases were traced to that one source. Current side effects may include drowsiness, diarrhea, nausea, headache, and visual blurring.
L-Phenylalanine commonly causes anxiety, constipation, headache, heartburn, insomnia, and nausea. The mushroom ingredients are generally well tolerated but may cause gastrointestinal upset, nausea, dizziness, or rash in some people, especially if raw or in high doses.
D-Ribose can cause diarrhea, gastrointestinal discomfort, headache, and lower blood sugar. L-Histidine safety at supplement doses is not well established.
L-Methionine at high supplement doses may cause dizziness, drowsiness, and low blood pressure. L-Lysine commonly causes abdominal pain and diarrhea.

Strength Gainz Tropical Punch by BPI Sports contains several ingredients with documented drug interactions.
The most serious concern is L-tryptophan, which carries a Major-severity interaction with CNS depressants (sedatives, sleep aids, anxiety medications, alcohol). Combining L-tryptophan with these drugs may cause excessive drowsiness and sedation.
L-tryptophan also interacts at Moderate severity with serotonergic drugs (antidepressants like SSRIs, certain pain medications), raising the theoretical risk of serotonin syndrome.

L-phenylalanine presents Major-severity interactions with levodopa (Parkinson's medication), as it can reduce levodopa's effectiveness and worsen tremor and rigidity. At Moderate severity, L-phenylalanine may reduce absorption of baclofen (a muscle relaxant) and theoretically increase the risk of high blood pressure (hypertensive crisis) with MAOIs (older antidepressants).
The mushroom ingredients also carry Moderate-severity interactions. Reishi mushroom may lower blood pressure excessively with antihypertensive drugs, increase bleeding risk with blood thinners (anticoagulants/antiplatelets), and have additive effects with diabetes medications.
Cordyceps, Shiitake, Lion's Mane, and Turkey Tail mushrooms similarly interact with blood thinners, diabetes drugs, and immunosuppressants at Moderate severity. Turkey Tail also interacts with the chemotherapy drug cyclophosphamide and the breast cancer drug tamoxifen.
D-Ribose carries Moderate interactions with diabetes medications and insulin, as it may lower blood sugar further. L-Lysine has a Minor interaction with certain serotonin drugs, and L-Theanine has Moderate and Minor interactions with blood pressure medications and CNS depressants respectively.
Additionally, L-Histidine and L-Methionine have no interactions documented in our data. Creatine (both forms) and several other amino acids we could not check also show no documented interactions.

L-Theonine
Antihypertensive Drugs
Theanine might lower blood pressure, potentiating the effects of antihypertensive drugs.
Animal research shows that theanine can lower blood pressure in spontaneously hypertensive animals. Theoretically, concomitant use of theanine and antihypertensive drugs might potentiate the antihypertensive activity.
Cns Depressants
Theoretically, theanine might have additive sedative effects when used in conjunction with CNS depressants. However, it is unclear if this concern is clinically relevant.
Theoretically, theanine may compete with glutamate and/or increase plasma gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) levels, which could cause CNS depression. In one clinical study, some subjects taking oral theanine reported drowsiness.
Serotonergic Drugs
Clinical studies regarding the effects of L-theanine on serotonin levels are conflicting. Some studies suggest it can increase serotonin levels in the brain while others report that it may decrease them. Nevertheless, there have been no reports of l-theanine being a causative agent in serotonergic-related side effects or serotonin syndrome.
L-Tryptophan
Cns Depressants
Theoretically, concomitant use of L-tryptophan with CNS depressants might cause additive sedative effects.
Clinical research shows that L-tryptophan can cause fatigue and drowsiness.
Serotonergic Drugs
Theoretically, combining L-tryptophan with serotonergic drugs might cause additive serotonergic effects.
L-tryptophan is a precursor to serotonin. Theoretically, combining serotonergic drugs with L-tryptophan might increase the risk of serotonergic side effects, including serotonin syndrome and cerebral vasoconstrictive disorders.
Reishi Mushroom
Anticoagulant/Antiplatelet Drugs
Theoretically, high doses of reishi mushroom might increase the risk of bleeding.
A dose of 1.5 grams daily of reishi mushroom does not seem to decrease platelet aggregation, but a higher dose of 3 grams daily does.
Antidiabetes Drugs
Theoretically, reishi mushroom might have additive effects with antidiabetes drugs.
Animal research suggests that reishi mushroom decreases blood sugar. However, in patients with type 2 diabetes, taking reishi mushroom does not reduce fasting glucose levels, and its effects on glycated hemoglobin are inconsistent.
Antihypertensive Drugs
Theoretically, concurrent use of reishi mushroom with antihypertensive drugs might increase the risk of hypotension.
Reishi mushroom has shown hypotensive activity in animal research. Clinical evidence suggests that reishi mushroom reduces blood pressure in some, but not all, patients with hypertension.
Lion's Mane Mushroom
Anticoagulant/Antiplatelet Drugs
Theoretically, lion's mane mushroom may increase the risk of bleeding when used with anticoagulant/antiplatelet drugs.
In vitro research suggests that lion's mane mushroom extracts can inhibit platelet aggregation.
Antidiabetes Drugs
Theoretically, lion's mane mushroom may have additive effects when used with antidiabetes drugs.
Animal research suggests that an aqueous extract of lion's mane mushroom can reduce serum glucose and increase serum insulin.
Immunosuppressants
Theoretically, concurrent use of lion's mane mushroom might interfere with immunosuppressive therapy.
In animal and in vitro research, lion's mane mushroom polysaccharides stimulate the immune system.
Shiitake Mushroom
Cytochrome P450 2D6 (Cyp2D6) Substrates
Theoretically, shiitake mushroom might decrease levels of drugs metabolized by CYP2D6.
In vitro studies suggest that the shiitake mushroom extract AHCC might induce the CYP2D6 enzyme. This effect has not been reported in humans.
Immunosuppressants
Theoretically, taking shiitake mushroom might decrease the effects of immunosuppressive therapy.
In vitro evidence suggests that shiitake mushroom extracts stimulate immune function.
Cordyceps Mushroom
Anticoagulant/Antiplatelet Drugs
Theoretically, cordyceps may increase the risk of bleeding when used with antiplatelet or anticoagulant drugs.
In vitro and animal research suggests that cordyceps extract inhibits platelet aggregation and function. However, this interaction has not been reported in humans.
Immunosuppressants
Theoretically, concurrent use of cordyceps might interfere with immunosuppressive therapy.
Animal and in vitro research suggests that cordyceps stimulates the immune system. However, limited clinical research suggests that taking cordyceps may lower the necessary therapeutic dose of the immunosuppressant cyclosporine, which suggests that cordyceps may have an immunosuppressive effect.
Testosterone
Theoretically, concurrent use of cordyceps and testosterone might have additive effects.
Animal research suggests that cordyceps can increase testosterone levels. The clinical significance of this finding is unclear.
Turkey Tail Mushroom
Antidiabetes Drugs
Theoretically, taking turkey tail mushroom with antidiabetes drugs might increase the risk of hypoglycemia.
Animal research suggests that turkey tail mushroom and a polysaccharide component can have hypoglycemic effects.
Cyclophosphamide
Theoretically, the polysaccharide peptide (PSP) component of turkey tail mushroom might increase exposure to cyclophosphamide.
Some animal research shows that the PSP component of turkey tail mushroom can increase the area under the concentration-time curve (AUC) of cyclophosphamide by 44% to 50% and the half-life by 34% to 43%. This interaction could potentially increase the effects and adverse effects of cyclophosphamide. However, it is not known whether PSP affects the levels of the active metabolites of cyclophosphamide that are responsible for its clinical activity.
Tamoxifen (Nolvadex)
Theoretically, the polysaccharide peptide (PSP) component of turkey tail mushroom might interfere with the absorption of tamoxifen.
Animal research suggests that PSP increases the time to reach maximum concentration of a single dose of tamoxifen by about 9.5 hours, or 228%. When repeated doses of tamoxifen were given, the time to reach maximum concentration was increased by about 5.6 hours, or 93%. However, PSP did not affect the maximum concentration or the area under the curve of tamoxifen.
Cytochrome P450 2C9 (Cyp2C9) Substrates
Theoretically, the polysaccharide peptide (PSP) component of turkey tail mushroom might inhibit CYP2C9.
Laboratory research suggests that the PSP component of turkey tail mushroom dose-dependently inhibits CYP2C9. Theoretically, taking PSP with drugs metabolized by CYP2C9 might increase drug levels and the risk of adverse effects. However, this has not been reported in humans.
D-Ribose
Antidiabetes Drugs
Theoretically, taking ribose in combination with antidiabetes drugs might increase the risk of hypoglycemia.
In clinical research, ribose decreases serum glucose levels in a dose-dependent manner.
Insulin
Theoretically, taking ribose with insulin could increase the hypoglycemic effect of insulin.
In clinical pharmacokinetic studies, oral administration of ribose modestly increased serum insulin levels.
L-Phenylalanine
Levodopa
Phenylalanine, especially in high doses, can reduce the effectiveness of levodopa.
Phenylalanine competes with levodopa for carrier-mediated transport into the brain. The resulting reduction in levels of levodopa in the brain can exacerbate tremor, rigidity, and the "on-off" phenomenon in patients with Parkinson disease.
Baclofen
Concomitant intake of phenylalanine may reduce the intestinal absorption of baclofen.
Phenylalanine and baclofen share the same intestinal carrier for absorption; phenylalanine competitively inhibits the absorption of baclofen, reducing its plasma levels.
Monoamine Oxidase Inhibitors (Maois)
Theoretically, concomitant use of L-phenylalanine and non-selective MAOIs might increase the risk of hypertensive crisis.
L-phenylalanine is metabolized to tyrosine. Some evidence suggests that L-phenylalanine, given with the non-selective MAOI pargyline, might prevent the elimination of tyramine, increasing the risk of hypertensive crisis. However, this was not reported in a small number of patients when using L-phenylalanine with the partially selective MAO-B inhibitor, selegiline.
L-Lysine
5-Ht4 Agonists
Theoretically, lysine may reduce the effects of 5-HT4 agonists.
Animal research suggests that L-lysine is a partial serotonin receptor 4 (5-HT4) antagonist and inhibits diarrhea induced by the 5-HT4 agonist, 5-hydroxytryptophane.
