Full

Every active ingredient lists its own amount on the label.

Why this rating?
  • The label discloses an exact amount for 4 of its 4 active ingredients.
  • No proprietary blends here — you can verify the dose of every single component.

This product has 4 active ingredients. Thiamine (vitamin B1) is an essential nutrient your body uses for energy and nerve function.

L-carnosine is a compound made from two amino acids, and benfotiamine is a fat-soluble form of thiamine that may absorb differently than regular thiamine. The fourth ingredient is luteolin, a plant compound we couldn't verify for interactions.

The capsule also contains several inactive ingredients — cellulose, microcrystalline cellulose, ascorbyl palmitate, and silica — which are fillers and binders.

Strong evidence
Evidence for Intended Use · database check
By FDA rules, dietary supplements can’t claim to treat, cure, or prevent disease — so labels speak in careful marketing language. We discern each product’s intended use from its name, label claims, and label statements, then grade the clinical evidence for that use. How these ratings are computed
Strong

Clinical evidence supports at least one of this product's ingredients for its stated purpose.

Why this rating?
  • The label markets this product for: Carnosine supplement for general wellness.
  • We looked for evidence on: Age-related cognitive decline, Athletic performance, Cataracts, Cognitive function, Cognitive impairment, Thiamine deficiency — and 3 related terms.
  • The strongest evidence on file: Thiamine is rated "Effective" for Thiamine deficiency (Natural Medicines).
  • Also on file: Thiamine is rated "Insufficient Reliable Evidence To Rate" for Cataracts, Cognitive function.
  • Also on file: Carnosine is rated "Insufficient Reliable Evidence To Rate" for Age-related cognitive decline, Athletic performance, Cataracts, Cognitive impairment.

Thiamine is effective for treating thiamine deficiency and Wernicke-Korsakoff syndrome, a serious brain condition. It's possibly effective for period pain (dysmenorrhea) but appears ineffective as a mosquito repellent and possibly ineffective for heart failure.

For L-carnosine and benfotiamine, the evidence we hold is much less clear. L-carnosine shows insufficient evidence for age-related cognitive decline, Alzheimer disease, athletic performance, cataracts, and cognitive impairment — meaning studies haven't been thorough enough yet to know if it works.

Benfotiamine is possibly effective for diabetic nerve damage (neuropathy) but possibly ineffective for kidney damage from diabetes. The evidence for other uses is insufficient.

How safe is it?

Well-documented data
Safety Information · database check
Well characterized

Adverse-effect, pregnancy, and general safety data are on file for most of these ingredients.

Why this rating?
  • We hold adverse-effect (side-effect) data for 3 of the 3 matched ingredients.
  • Pregnancy & breastfeeding safety ratings cover 3 of 3.
  • General safety write-ups exist for 3 of 3.
  • Remember: this measures how much safety information exists. Thin data is not the same as being safe.

Thiamine is generally very safe by mouth in normal amounts, though rare allergic reactions like dermatitis have been reported. Thiamine is needed during pregnancy and breastfeeding, so use it only at the doses your doctor or pharmacist recommends.

L-carnosine is generally well tolerated in short studies, but long-term safety data are sparse. It hasn't been adequately studied in pregnancy or while breastfeeding — the safety data advise against use in both.

Side effects reported include decreased appetite, dry mouth, weight changes, foot and joint pain, and rarely pneumonia. Benfotiamine is generally well tolerated; in one clinical trial, a small number of participants reported allergic skin reactions or mild stomach discomfort, but these rates matched placebo.

Pregnancy and breastfeeding safety data for benfotiamine aren't well established; talk with your doctor before use.

The most serious documented interaction for these ingredients is Moderate. Check your medications for a personalized result.

Why this rating?
  • 2 of the 3 matched ingredients can interact with medications — Thiamine, Carnosine.
  • The most serious interaction on file is rated Moderate.
  • Some involve high-stakes drug classes: diabetes medications.
  • For scale: 89 individual medications appear in the full list. A big number alone doesn't make a product dangerous — what matters is whether YOUR medication is on it, so run yours through the interaction checker on this page.

Before you take this, check with your pharmacist if you're on diabetes medications — carnosine may increase the risk of low blood sugar. Also check if you take trimethoprim (Proloprim), an antibiotic that can raise thiamine blood levels.

The bottom line

Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with clinical evidence supporting its stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.

Super Carnosine is worth considering if you're looking to supplement thiamine or explore benfotiamine for diabetic nerve damage, but it's not proven for most other uses listed. If you take diabetes medications or trimethoprim (an antibiotic), check with your pharmacist first — the carnosine and thiamine here could affect how those drugs work.

Super Carnosine 500 mg by Life Extension: Common Questions

Does Super Carnosine 500 mg by Life Extension interact with any medications?
Yes. Based on its ingredients, Super Carnosine 500 mg has a known interaction with 89 medications. Use the checker to see how it interacts with a specific drug.
How can one product interact with so many drugs?
Super Carnosine 500 mg contains 4 active ingredients, and an interaction can come from any of them. We check every ingredient, combine the results into one list per medication, and show which ingredient and mechanism is responsible.
Where does this information come from?
The product label data comes from the NIH Dietary Supplement Label Database (DSLD); the interaction data is built on the Natural Medicines database and reviewed by HelloPharmacist pharmacists.
Can I take this if I'm pregnant or breastfeeding?
Thiamine is needed in pregnancy and while breastfeeding — the data rate it as likely safe — but only use it at doses your doctor advises. L-carnosine hasn't been adequately studied in pregnancy or breastfeeding; the safety data say to avoid it unless your doctor recommends otherwise. Benfotiamine safety data in pregnancy and breastfeeding aren't well established either. Talk with your doctor or pharmacist before taking this product if you're pregnant or nursing.
Will this help with my memory or brain fog?
The evidence for these uses is limited. L-carnosine and benfotiamine show insufficient evidence for age-related cognitive decline and Alzheimer disease — meaning we don't have enough good studies yet to say whether they work. Thiamine is effective for thiamine deficiency, which can affect brain function, but not proven for general brain health.
What side effects might I get?
Thiamine is very safe, though rare allergic reactions have been reported. L-carnosine may cause decreased appetite, dry mouth, mild weight changes, or foot and joint pain. Benfotiamine is generally well tolerated; in trials, a few people reported mild allergic skin reactions or stomach discomfort, but at the same rate as placebo. Long-term safety data for both L-carnosine and benfotiamine are limited.
Is this effective for diabetic nerve damage?
Benfotiamine, one of the ingredients, is possibly effective for diabetic neuropathy (nerve damage from diabetes). However, if you take diabetes medications, you should check with your pharmacist first — the L-carnosine in this product may lower blood sugar, raising your risk of going too low.
What exactly is each ingredient for?
Thiamine (vitamin B1) is essential for energy and nerve function. L-carnosine is a compound from amino acids — the evidence for most uses is unclear. Benfotiamine is a form of thiamine that absorbs differently, and it's being studied for diabetic nerve damage. We couldn't verify the fourth ingredient, luteolin, so we can't tell you what data support it.
Does this product have any fillers?
Yes. Besides the four active ingredients, the capsule contains cellulose, microcrystalline cellulose, ascorbyl palmitate, and silica as inactive ingredients.
