Tangerine Ingredients & Drug Interactions
by doTERRA
What is this page for?
First and foremost: checking Tangerine against your medications. The heart of this page is the interaction checker and the full interaction report — how this product’s ingredients may interact with prescription and over-the-counter medicines you may be taking.
Around that, we add a pharmacist’s high-level view of the product as a whole — what’s inside, the evidence for its stated use, how transparent the label is, and what safety data exists — so you can see the full picture in one place. It’s educational information from our licensed clinical databases and the clinical staff at HelloPharmacist — not medical advice — and we don’t sell or endorse products. Our editorial policy

What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product contains one active ingredient: tangerine. It's a liquid form, which typically means the tangerine is either pressed juice, an extract, or infused oil.
There are no other inactive ingredients listed.
Does it work?
Couldn't assess
The data we hold rates tangerine for cancer prevention as having insufficient reliable evidence — meaning there isn't enough solid research to know whether it works for that purpose. We don't hold effectiveness ratings for other potential uses.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Tangerine fruit itself is generally well tolerated when eaten as food. However, the facts note caution with concentrated extracts and essential oils, which aren't as well studied for safety.
Very few adverse effects have been reported with medicinal use of tangerine, though a complete safety review hasn't been done. If this is an essential oil, contact dermatitis has been reported in rare cases.
Pregnancy and breastfeeding data isn't on file for tangerine. Talk with your doctor or pharmacist about whether this product is right for you during pregnancy or while nursing.
Meds to double-check
Minor interactions only
If you take any medication processed by the liver enzyme CYP3A4 — which includes a wide range of drugs from sedatives like midazolam to blood pressure and cholesterol medications — double-check before adding this product. The interaction is rated Minor, but affecting 633 medications means a quick verification with your pharmacist is smart.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with no assessable stated purpose. Only minor medication interactions are documented, and safety information is well characterized.
Tangerine as a food is safe and well tolerated. If you're taking medications metabolized by your liver — particularly sedatives, blood pressure drugs, or cholesterol medications — check your specific drugs with the tool below before starting this supplement.
The real-world interaction risk is likely lower than lab studies suggest, but it's worth confirming with your pharmacist.

HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Tangerine by doTERRA is a single-ingredient liquid supplement.
The main interaction documented involves how tangerine may affect how your body processes certain medications metabolized by the liver enzyme CYP3A4. Altogether, these interactions span 633 individual medications.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
The most notable concern is with midazolam (Versed), a sedative. In lab studies, tangeretin (a compound in tangerine) appeared to speed up midazolam's breakdown by up to 52%.
However, when people actually drank 200 mL of tangerine juice, it only slightly delayed how fast the body absorbed midazolam — it didn't change how the liver metabolized it. This is rated Minor severity because the real-world effect is modest and inconsistent with the lab prediction.
Because tangerine affects the CYP3A4 enzyme, it theoretically could influence how your body processes a large class of drugs that depend on that same pathway — including certain blood pressure medications, cholesterol drugs, antihistamines, and others. The practical impact remains unclear from human studies.
Run your exact medications through the interaction checker on this page before you start.

Tangerine
Cytochrome P450 3A4 (Cyp3A4) Substrates
In vitro, tangeretin, a constituent of tangerine, induces a 52% increase in the metabolism of midazolam by cytochrome P450 3A4 (CYP3A4). This suggests that tangeretin may stimulate CYP3A4 activity. However, in humans, drinking tangerine juice 200 mL slightly delayed the absorption, but did not affect the metabolism, of midazolam, a CYP3A4 substrate. Theoretically, tangerine juice might increase CYP3A4 activity and decrease levels of drugs metabolized by this enzyme. However, this effect is unlikely.
Some drugs metabolized by CYP3A4 include amitriptyline (Elavil), amiodarone (Cordarone), citalopram (Celexa), felodipine (Plendil), lansoprazole (Prevacid), ondansetron (Zofran), prednisone (Deltasone, Orasone), sertraline (Zoloft), sibutramine (Meridia), and many others.
Midazolam (Versed)
In vitro, tangeretin, a constituent of tangerine, appears to increase the metabolism of midazolam in human liver microsomes by up to 52%. However, in humans, drinking tangerine juice 200 mL slightly delayed the absorption, but did not affect the metabolism, of midazolam. Theoretically, tangerine juice might increase the metabolism and reduce the effects of midazolam. However, this effect is unlikely.
