Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Full disclosure
Taurine 500 mg by Douglas Cooper Co. contains one active ingredient: taurine, an amino acid your body naturally makes and uses in many tissues, especially the heart, brain, and eyes. Each capsule delivers 500 mg.
The capsule itself is gelatin, and rice flour is used as a filler to make up the form.
Does it work?
Moderate evidence
In the data we hold, taurine is rated possibly effective for hepatitis and for congestive heart failure (CHF, a condition in which the heart can't pump blood efficiently). It's rated possibly ineffective for obesity.
Evidence for these uses is not conclusive, so talk with your doctor about whether taurine makes sense for your specific situation.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Taurine is generally well tolerated in typical doses for up to one year. The most common side effects are constipation, diarrhea, and indigestion.
Serious side effects are rare; case reports describe allergic reactions (particularly in people with a history of sulfonamide or sulfite allergies) and rare cardiovascular concerns, though those involved energy drinks with many other ingredients, so it's unclear whether taurine alone caused them. The long-term safety of supplement doses isn't well established, so use only under medical guidance.
Taurine is likely safe in pregnancy and lactation, though supplement safety during breastfeeding hasn't been well studied—talk with your doctor or pharmacist if you're nursing.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
If you take an antihypertensive drug (blood pressure medication), check with your doctor or pharmacist before starting—taurine may lower your blood pressure further. If you take lithium for bipolar disorder, do the same, because taurine might raise your lithium levels.
These are Moderate severity concerns.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with some supporting evidence for its stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
Taurine 500 mg may help with hepatitis or heart failure, but the evidence isn't strong. If you take a blood pressure medication or lithium, you'll want to clear it with your doctor or pharmacist first, because taurine can lower blood pressure and may affect how your body handles lithium.
Most people tolerate it without trouble, but long-term safety data is limited.

Formulation
Taurine is a conditionally essential amino acid that is not utilized for protein synthesis, but is mainly found free in most tissues, especially throughout the nervous system. It functions in tissues by stabilizing cell membranes and aiding the transport of potassium, sodium, calcium and magnesium in and out of cells. Taurine helps to generate and regulate nerve impulses and supports the maintenance of normal fluid balance; it is also used by the body in visual pathways, as well as in the brain and nervous system, where it works together with glycine and GABA as a neurotransmitter.
