Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Full disclosure
This supplement contains one active ingredient: taurine, an amino acid your body makes naturally and that's found in many foods, especially meat and fish. The capsule also contains three inactive ingredients — vegetable cellulose, microcrystalline cellulose, and stearic acid — which are common binders and fillers.
Does it work?
Moderate evidence
The evidence here is modest. Taurine is possibly effective for hepatitis and possibly effective for congestive heart failure (a condition where the heart doesn't pump blood efficiently).
However, it's rated possibly ineffective for weight loss. The research isn't strong enough to say taurine will definitely help any of these conditions, so talk with your doctor about whether it makes sense for your situation.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Taurine is generally well tolerated when you take it by mouth in typical doses for up to a year. The most common side effects are mild — constipation, diarrhea, or indigestion.
Rare serious reactions include allergic responses (especially in people sensitive to sulfa drugs or sulfites) and very rare cardiovascular concerns reported only in case studies involving energy drinks with taurine plus many other ingredients, so it's unclear if taurine itself was the culprit. Long-term safety beyond one year hasn't been well studied, and the safety of supplement doses in particular isn't fully established, so use this only under medical guidance.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Before you start, double-check any blood pressure medications (antihypertensive drugs) you take — taurine could lower your pressure further. Also check if you're on lithium; taurine might raise its level in your blood.
Both are moderate interactions. Use the medication checker below to verify your prescriptions.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with some supporting evidence for its stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
Taurine may be worth considering if your doctor recommends it for heart failure or hepatitis and you're not on blood pressure medication or lithium. If you take either of those drug types, check with your pharmacist first — interactions are possible.
Anyone with a history of sulfa or sulfite sensitivity should be cautious too.

Taurine 500 mg by Solgar Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Solgar's Taurine 500 mg can interact with blood pressure medications and lithium, so you'll want to check your exact prescriptions before starting it.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
Taurine may lower blood pressure on its own, and when combined with antihypertensive drugs (the medications your doctor gives you to manage high blood pressure), there's a moderate risk of blood pressure dropping too far. Additionally, taurine is thought to have mild water-shedding (diuretic) properties, which could theoretically reduce how your body clears lithium — a mood stabilizer used for bipolar disorder — and cause levels to build up in your system.
That's also a moderate concern.
Although taurine is just one ingredient, these interactions span 171 individual medications. Use the interaction checker on this page to look up your current prescriptions, or ask your pharmacist to run them for you before you start.
