Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product contains one active ingredient: taurine, an amino acid-like compound at 500 mg per capsule. Taurine occurs naturally in your body and in animal foods like meat and fish.
The remaining ingredients—gelatin, microcrystalline cellulose, calcium laurate, and silica—are inactive binders and capsule material to hold the supplement together.
Does it work?
Moderate evidence
The evidence on taurine is mixed and limited. Research suggests it's possibly effective for hepatitis and congestive heart failure (a condition where your heart can't pump blood efficiently).
For weight loss, the evidence leans toward possibly ineffective. These ratings mean the data is promising in some studies but not yet solid enough to call it proven.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Taurine is generally well tolerated when you take typical doses for up to about a year. The most common side effects are mild: constipation, diarrhea, or indigestion.
Serious side effects are rare; a small number of case reports describe allergic reactions in people with a history of sulfur-based drug allergies or sulfite sensitivity. Long-term safety beyond one year is less certain, and we don't have enough reliable safety data on supplement doses, so use only under your doctor's or pharmacist's guidance.
While taurine naturally occurs in breast milk, supplement safety during breastfeeding isn't well studied, so talk with your provider if you're nursing.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Before you start, double-check if you take any blood pressure medications (antihypertensives) or lithium—both are rated moderate-severity interactions with taurine. No other interactions are documented in our data for the ingredient we checked.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with some supporting evidence for its stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
Taurine may help with hepatitis or heart failure, though the evidence isn't definitive yet. If you take blood pressure medications or lithium, check with your pharmacist first—this supplement could affect how those drugs work.
Anyone with a sulfite or sulfonamide allergy should use caution. Talk to your pharmacist about whether this fits your individual health needs.

Taurine 500 mg by Swanson Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Swanson's Taurine 500 mg can interact with blood pressure medications and lithium, so you'll want to check your exact medications before starting.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
Taurine may lower your blood pressure on its own. If you're already taking drugs to bring your blood pressure down (antihypertensives), combining them with this supplement could push your pressure too low — that's a moderate concern.
Additionally, taurine is thought to have mild diuretic properties (it makes your body shed a bit more fluid), which could theoretically slow how your kidneys clear lithium from your system. That means lithium levels in your blood could climb, and that's also rated moderate severity.
Additionally, our data shows no other documented interactions with common drug types. That said, check your full medication list with the search tool on this page to be sure.
