Thyroid Calming Ingredients & Drug Interactions
by Herb Pharm
What is this page for?
First and foremost: checking Thyroid Calming against your medications. The heart of this page is the interaction checker and the full interaction report — how this product’s ingredients may interact with prescription and over-the-counter medicines you may be taking.
Around that, we add a pharmacist’s high-level view of the product as a whole — what’s inside, the evidence for its stated use, how transparent the label is, and what safety data exists — so you can see the full picture in one place. It’s educational information from our licensed clinical databases and the clinical staff at HelloPharmacist — not medical advice — and we don’t sell or endorse products. Our editorial policy

HelloPharmacist Scorecard of Thyroid Calming by Herb Pharm
Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Low disclosure
Thyroid Calming contains four active ingredients. Bugleweed (flowering aerial parts extract) is traditionally used for thyroid concerns.
Cactus grandiflorus, or cereus (fresh stem extract), is included for its effects on the heart and nervous system. Lemon balm (fresh aerial parts extract) is added for stress and mood support.
Motherwort (flowering aerial parts extract) completes the blend for additional cardiovascular and calming effects. The product comes in liquid form and contains cane alcohol, water, and glycerin as inactive ingredients.
Does it work?
Moderate evidence
The evidence for this product's ingredients is mixed. Bugleweed, cactus grandiflorus, and motherwort all lack reliable evidence to support their use for hyperthyroidism, the main condition someone might reach for this product for — the data rates them as insufficient evidence.
Lemon balm is possibly effective for stress and cold sores, which may play a supporting role. Overall, the scientific backing for using this product specifically for thyroid support is not established in our data.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Lemon balm is generally well tolerated for short-term use in healthy adults, though long-term safety isn't well studied. A small number of people report dizziness or sedation, though it doesn't happen more often than with placebo.
Motherwort and bugleweed are tolerated short-term, but human safety data are limited. Motherwort in amounts over 3 grams can cause uterine bleeding, and it and motherwort leaves may cause contact dermatitis or photosensitivity.
Fresh cereus juice may cause mouth burning, nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea in some people. Bugleweed is rated likely unsafe in pregnancy because it may affect hormone levels.
Lemon balm is best avoided in pregnancy unless your doctor advises otherwise — the data isn't enough to know either way. Motherwort is rated likely unsafe in pregnancy because it's traditionally thought to stimulate the uterus.
Bugleweed should not be used while breastfeeding because it may reduce milk production. Lemon balm and motherwort should be avoided while breastfeeding due to insufficient safety data.
Cereus has no reliable safety data for pregnancy or breastfeeding.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Before you take this, double-check with your pharmacist or doctor if you're on thyroid hormone replacement (like levothyroxine), any CNS depressants (sedatives, sleep aids, anxiety meds, or pain relievers that cause drowsiness), digoxin (a heart medication), or MAOIs (older antidepressants). All of these have documented interactions with ingredients in this product.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFormula with limited ingredient disclosure with some supporting evidence for its stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
This product is aimed at people interested in natural thyroid support, but the evidence for its main ingredients in that role is not established. If you take thyroid hormones, CNS depressants, digoxin, or MAOIs, you need to check your exact medications before starting.
Talk to your pharmacist or doctor first — especially if you're pregnant, breastfeeding, or taking any prescription drugs.

Thyroid Calming by Herb Pharm Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Thyroid Calming by Herb Pharm contains four active ingredients, and together they interact with a significant number of medications.
The most serious concern is bugleweed, which moderately interacts with thyroid hormones — it may block the conversion of T4 to T3, potentially reducing how well your thyroid replacement therapy works.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
Lemon balm and motherwort both interact moderately with CNS depressants (sedatives, sleep aids, anxiety medications, pain relievers that cause drowsiness). Using them together may add up to extra drowsiness or sedation.
Lemon balm also moderately interacts with thyroid hormone medications by a different mechanism — it may interfere with how your body responds to TSH, the hormone that signals your thyroid.
Cactus grandiflorus (cereus) moderately interacts with digoxin, a heart medication, potentially strengthening its effects on your heart. It also moderately interacts with MAOIs, a class of older antidepressants, because of tyramine content.
Altogether, these interactions span 273 individual medications. Before you start this product, use the medication checker below to look up your exact drugs.

Lemon Balm Aerial Parts Extract, Fresh, Undried
Cns Depressants
Theoretically, concomitant use of lemon balm might have additive effects with CNS depressant drugs.
Lemon balm seems to have CNS depressant activity in animals and in humans.
Thyroid Hormone
Theoretically, lemon balm might interfere with thyroid hormone replacement therapy.
In vitro, constituents of lemon balm extract bind to thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH), preventing TSH receptor-binding and leading to the inhibition of TSH-stimulated adenylate cyclase activity. In animals, lemon balm extract has been shown to decrease levels of circulating TSH and inhibit thyroid secretion.
Motherwort Flowering Aerial Parts Extract
Cns Depressants
Theoretically, taking motherwort concomitantly with other CNS depressants may increase the risk of sedation.
Motherwort has been reported to cause CNS depression and sedation.
Bugleweed flowering aerial parts extract
Thyroid Hormone
Theoretically, bugleweed may alter thyroid function.
Concomitant use of bugleweed may reduce the effects of thyroid hormones by blocking peripheral conversion of thyroxine (T4) to triiodothyronine (T3).
Cactus grandiflorus Stem Extract, Fresh, Undried
Digoxin (Lanoxin)
Cereus may potentiate the actions of cardiac glycosides and may enhance the effect of other cardiac drugs.
Monoamine Oxidase Inhibitors (Maois)
Theoretically, excessive doses of cereus may interact with MAOIs, because of the tyramine content.
