Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.
CNS DEPRESSANTS
Why this applies to Mephenytoin
Mephenytoin falls under CNS DEPRESSANTS — the group Lemon Balm interacts with.
Lemon balm seems to have CNS depressant activity in animals and in humans.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Mephenytoin (Mesantoin) is an older anti-seizure medicine, and one of its most common effects is making you feel drowsy, dizzy, or unsteady on your feet. Lemon balm has its own mild calming, sleep-promoting action. When you take them together, those quieting effects can stack up, so you might feel sleepier or foggier than you expect.
Keep in mind this is mostly a theoretical concern based on smaller studies, not a dangerous, well-proven reaction. An occasional cup of lemon balm tea is unlikely to cause much trouble, but stronger supplement doses are more likely to add to the sedation. Please don't change anything on your own. Just check with your pharmacist or doctor, especially if you notice extra drowsiness.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Mephenytoin page
“Anyone taking mephenytoin (Mesantoin) for seizures should read this page with genuine care rather than as background noise. The biggest cluster of interactions piles sedation on top of a drug that already slows the nervous system, and alcohol, whether beer or wine, sits at the serious end of that group.”

About Lemon Balm
What is Lemon Balm?
- Anxiety and stress
- Sleep problems
- Digestive upset
- Cold sores
- Restlessness or nervousness
Lemon balm is a gentle, lemon-scented mint-family herb traditionally used to ease stress, support sleep, and calm digestion, and topically for cold sores. Early studies are promising but generally small, so the evidence is limited. It is usually well tolerated for most adults, but pregnant or breastfeeding people should check with a doctor or pharmacist first.
