What’s inside

Low disclosure
Ingredient Transparency · database check
Low

Most active ingredients don't disclose an individual amount — you can't tell how much of each you're getting.

Why this rating?
  • The label discloses an exact amount for 0 of its 12 active ingredients.
  • “Adult 50+ Probiotic Culture Blend” is a proprietary blend — the label gives one combined amount (93 mg) without saying how much of each component you get.
  • “Bifido Probiotic Blend” is a proprietary blend — the label doesn't break down how much of each component you get.
  • “Lacto Probiotic Blend” is a proprietary blend — the label doesn't break down how much of each component you get.

This is a 12-ingredient probiotic blend containing live bacterial cultures. The product includes two Lactobacillus acidophilus strains plus nine other bacterial species or strains (like L. plantarum, L. rhamnosus GG, and several Bifidobacterium types).

These are the active ingredients — they're the live microorganisms meant to support your gut health. The capsule itself is made from inactive ingredients like microcrystalline cellulose (a plant fiber), hypromellose (a thickener), gellan gum, and medium chain triglycerides.

Does it work?

Moderate evidence
Evidence for Intended Use · database check
By FDA rules, dietary supplements can’t claim to treat, cure, or prevent disease — so labels speak in careful marketing language. We discern each product’s intended use from its name, label claims, and label statements, then grade the clinical evidence for that use. How these ratings are computed
Moderate

Some clinical evidence supports this product's ingredients for its stated purpose, but it isn't conclusive.

Why this rating?
  • The label markets this product for: digestive and immune health support.
  • We looked for evidence on: Antibiotic-associated diarrhea, Bacterial vaginosis, Clostridioides difficile infection, Constipation, Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) — and 4 related terms.
  • The strongest evidence on file: Lactobacillus Acidophilus is rated "Possibly Effective" for Antibiotic-associated diarrhea (Natural Medicines).
  • Also on file: Lactobacillus Acidophilus is rated "Possibly Effective" for Bacterial vaginosis, Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS).
  • Also on file: Lactobacillus Acidophilus is rated "Insufficient Reliable Evidence To Rate" for Constipation, Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), Rotaviral diarrhea, Respiratory tract infections.

The Lactobacillus acidophilus strains in this product are possibly effective for irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), Helicobacter pylori infection, antibiotic-associated diarrhea, and bacterial vaginosis, based on the clinical evidence we hold. They're rated possibly ineffective for atopic disease.

For acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), the evidence is too limited to rate. For the other bacterial strains in the blend, we don't have effectiveness ratings on file.

How safe is it?

Well-documented data
Safety Information · database check
Well characterized

Adverse-effect, pregnancy, and general safety data are on file for most of these ingredients.

Why this rating?
  • We hold adverse-effect (side-effect) data for 1 of the 1 matched ingredient.
  • Pregnancy & breastfeeding safety ratings cover 1 of 1.
  • General safety write-ups exist for 1 of 1.
  • Remember: this measures how much safety information exists. Thin data is not the same as being safe.

Lactobacillus acidophilus is generally well tolerated in healthy adults and children. Gastrointestinal side effects — like stomach discomfort, bloating, gas, diarrhea, or burping — can happen when you take it with other probiotics, but these are uncommon.

Because the product contains live microorganisms, there's a theoretical concern they could cause infection in certain patients; rare cases of L. acidophilus have been linked to serious infections like sepsis or endocarditis, though most occurred in people with underlying conditions. In one trial using a multi-strain blend, a couple of participants developed rash or itching, though it's unclear if L. acidophilus was responsible.

Check with your doctor before starting, especially if you have a weakened immune system or are critically ill.

The most serious documented interaction for these ingredients is Moderate. Check your medications for a personalized result.

Why this rating?
  • 1 of the 1 matched ingredient can interact with medications — Lactobacillus Acidophilus.
  • The most serious interaction on file is rated Moderate.
  • For scale: 182 individual medications appear in the full list. A big number alone doesn't make a product dangerous — what matters is whether YOUR medication is on it, so run yours through the interaction checker on this page.

If you take antibiotics, check with us before you start this probiotic. Antibiotics can reduce how well the live bacteria work if you take them at the same time.

The bottom line

Scorecard at a glanceFormula with limited ingredient disclosure with some supporting evidence for its stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.

This probiotic is mainly for people looking to support digestive health, particularly those with IBS, antibiotic-related diarrhea, or certain infections. If you're on antibiotics, separate the doses — take your antibiotic and probiotic several hours apart so the antibiotic doesn't kill the beneficial bacteria.

Talk to your pharmacist before you start, especially if you have any immune concerns.

Ultimate Flora Adult 50+ Probiotic by Renew Life: Common Questions

Does Ultimate Flora Adult 50+ Probiotic by Renew Life interact with any medications?
Yes. Based on its ingredients, Ultimate Flora Adult 50+ Probiotic has a known interaction with 182 medications. Use the checker to see how it interacts with a specific drug.
How can one product interact with so many drugs?
Ultimate Flora Adult 50+ Probiotic contains 2 active ingredients, and an interaction can come from any of them. We check every ingredient, combine the results into one list per medication, and show which ingredient and mechanism is responsible.
Where does this information come from?
The product label data comes from the NIH Dietary Supplement Label Database (DSLD); the interaction data is built on the Natural Medicines database and reviewed by HelloPharmacist pharmacists.
Will this probiotic work if I'm on an antibiotic?
Not if you take them together. Antibiotics can kill the live bacteria in the probiotic, leaving fewer active organisms to work. Separate your doses — take your antibiotic at one time of day and the probiotic several hours later. Ask your pharmacist for the best timing for your specific antibiotic.
What are these bacteria supposed to do?
The Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium strains in this blend are meant to support your gut health. The evidence shows they're possibly effective for irritable bowel syndrome, antibiotic-related diarrhea, Helicobacter pylori, and bacterial vaginosis.
Can this cause side effects?
Most people tolerate it well, but some experience mild gastrointestinal discomfort, bloating, gas, or diarrhea — these are uncommon. In rare cases, Lactobacillus has caused serious infections in people with weakened immune systems, though this is very unusual. Check with your doctor before starting if you're immunocompromised or critically ill.
Is this safe for me if I'm pregnant or breastfeeding?
We don't have safety data on file for these ingredients during pregnancy or breastfeeding. Talk with your doctor or pharmacist to decide whether it's right for you in those situations.
What's in the capsule besides the probiotics?
The capsule contains microcrystalline cellulose, hypromellose, gellan gum, and medium chain triglycerides — these are inactive ingredients used to hold the probiotics and help the capsule stay stable.
