Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Full disclosure
Ultimate Krill Omega-3 contains 7 active ingredients centered on omega-3 fatty acids from Antarctic krill oil. The product includes eicosapentaenoic acid and docosahexaenoic acid — two omega-3s your body uses for heart and brain health — plus phospholipids that help your body absorb them.
Astaxanthin, a natural antioxidant found in krill, is also included. The softgel capsule also carries a proprietary orange essence flavoring.
The only inactive ingredient listed is the soft-gelatin capsule itself.
Does it work?
Insufficient evidence
Krill oil in this product is possibly effective for dry eye symptoms. For everything else — including aging skin, Alzheimer disease, cancer, high cholesterol, and cognitive function — the evidence we have isn't strong enough to rate.
Astaxanthin's effectiveness for age-related cognitive decline, macular degeneration, aging skin, and other conditions also lacks reliable evidence to rate, meaning studies haven't shown clear benefits yet.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Antarctic Krill Oil is generally well tolerated, but skip this product if you have a shellfish allergy — krill is a shellfish product. If you have a bleeding disorder, use caution and talk to your doctor first.
Gastrointestinal side effects like bloating, diarrhea, fishy burps, heartburn, and nausea are most common, though they tend to be milder with krill oil than with fish oil. Headache, tiredness, and dizziness have been reported rarely.
Astaxanthin is also generally well tolerated, though long-term safety data are limited. Most common side effects are abdominal pain, diarrhea, and red-colored stool.
At very high doses (40 mg daily), severe stomach pain has been reported in a small number of people. For pregnancy and breastfeeding, we don't have enough safety data for either ingredient — talk with your doctor or pharmacist about whether this product is right for you before using it during pregnancy or while nursing.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Before starting Ultimate Krill Omega-3, check with your pharmacist if you take blood thinners or antiplatelet drugs like warfarin or aspirin (Moderate risk of increased bleeding), diabetes medications (Moderate risk of low blood sugar), or drugs broken down by your liver's CYP3A4 or CYP2B6 enzymes — a large group that includes many common medications (Moderate risk of decreased drug levels).
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with insufficient evidence for its stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
This is a solid krill oil omega-3 supplement that's particularly worth considering if you have dry eyes. If you take blood thinners, diabetes medications, or any drugs your liver breaks down — which is most of them — check your medications with the tool on this page first.

Antarctic Krill are tiny, shrimp-like creatures that live in the oceans near Antarctica and represent one of the most abundant life forms on the planet. Krill Oil provides a unique source of the most important Omege-3 fatty acids EPA and DHA, but in a distinctive and highly absorbable phospholipid form. Another bonus: Krill Oil’s rich reddish color comes from the presence of trace amounts of the protective carotenoids Astaxanthin. Omega-3s are absolutely essential for our good health, yet they cannot be made by the body, so their benefits are only available from cold water fish or an Omega-3 dietary supplement. Research has shown that diets rich in Omega-3s are associated with superior heart, brain, circulatory and general health; yet sadly, the American diet delivers alarmingly low levels of these precious fatty acids.

Ultimate Krill Omega-3 by ProCaps Laboratories Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Ultimate Krill Omega-3 by ProCaps Laboratories contains two ingredients with documented interactions.
The most serious finding involves Antarctic Krill Oil, which carries Moderate-severity interactions with blood thinners (anticoagulants and antiplatelet drugs). High doses of the omega-3 fatty acids in krill oil may slow your blood's ability to clot, which could increase bleeding risk if you're already taking medications that thin your blood.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
Krill Oil also has a Moderate interaction with diabetes medications. Some research suggests krill oil might lower blood sugar, but a small clinical trial found it didn't reduce glucose in people with type 2 diabetes on antidiabetes drugs.
The interaction is theoretical rather than proven in humans.
Astaxanthin, another active ingredient, has Moderate-severity interactions with two groups of drugs metabolized by your liver: CYP3A4 and CYP2B6 substrates. Lab research shows astaxanthin may speed up how your liver breaks down these medications, potentially lowering their levels — though this hasn't been reported in actual patients yet.
We couldn't check three other ingredients: Eicosapentaenoic Acid, Docosahexaenoic Acid, Phospholipids, Other Omega-3 Fatty Acids, and Proprietary Orange essence. Altogether, these interactions span 827 individual medications.
Use the medication checker on this page to see if any of your prescriptions are affected.

For each ingredient in Ultimate Krill Omega-3 with known interactions, here are the types of medications they can affect. Open any type for the detail — or search your exact drug in the checker above.
Astaxanthin
Cytochrome P450 2B6 (Cyp2B6) Substrates
Theoretically, astaxanthin may decrease levels of drugs metabolized by CYP2B6.
In vitro research shows that astaxanthin induces cytochrome CYP2B6 enzyme activity in human hepatocytes. This effect has not been reported in humans.
Cytochrome P450 3A4 (Cyp3A4) Substrates
Theoretically, astaxanthin may decrease levels of drugs metabolized by CYP3A4.
In vitro research shows that astaxanthin induces CYP3A4 enzyme activity in human hepatocytes. This effect has not been reported in humans.
Antarctic Krill Oil
Anticoagulant/Antiplatelet Drugs
Theoretically, krill oil may increase the risk of bleeding if used with anticoagulant or antiplatelet drugs.
Taking high doses of omega-3 fatty acids from fish oil can modestly decrease platelet aggregation. Since krill oil also contains these fatty acids, taking high doses of krill oil might also inhibit platelet aggregation. Theoretically, taking high doses of krill oil with antiplatelet or anticoagulant drugs might increase the risk of bleeding. However, the omega-3 content of krill oil is much lower than that of fish oil.
Antidiabetes Drugs
Theoretically, taking krill oil with antidiabetes drugs might increase the risk of hypoglycemia.
Some research in animals and humans shows that krill oil might lower blood glucose levels. However, a small study shows that taking krill oil does not reduce blood glucose levels in patients with type 2 diabetes, most of whom were taking antidiabetes drugs.
