Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product contains one active ingredient: vitamin B-12 at 1000 micrograms per tablet. B-12 is an essential vitamin your body needs to make red blood cells, support your nerve function, and help your cells use energy.
The tablet also contains several inactive ingredients — calcium carbonate, vegetable cellulose, stearic acid, silica, and vegetable magnesium stearate — which help hold the tablet together and aid absorption.
Does it work?
Strong evidence
Vitamin B-12 is effective for treating Imerslund-Grasbeck disease (a rare genetic disorder affecting B-12 absorption) and vitamin B-12 deficiency itself. It's also likely effective for cyanide poisoning.
For canker sores and postherpetic neuralgia (nerve pain after shingles), the evidence suggests it may help, though the data is less robust.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
B-12 is generally very well-tolerated by mouth. Your body removes excess B-12 in your urine, so there's no established upper limit — you can't really overdose on it.
Allergic reactions are rare but possible and may include rash, itching, redness, or hives; theoretically these could be tied to the cobalt in the B-12 molecule, though this is uncommon. B-12 is safe during pregnancy and breastfeeding at normal recommended amounts — in fact, it's needed during both — but follow your provider's guidance on dosing.
Meds to double-check
Minor interactions only
If you take metformin for diabetes, check with your pharmacist before starting — metformin can lower B-12 levels, and a Minor interaction is documented. No other interactions are documented for the ingredients we could check.
The bottom line

B-12 1000 mcg is a good choice if you have a documented deficiency or are at risk for one — especially if you take metformin, follow a vegan diet, or have absorption issues. If you take metformin, mention this supplement to your pharmacist to make sure your B-12 levels stay in check.
