Evidence for Intended Use · database check
By FDA rules, dietary supplements can’t claim to treat, cure, or prevent disease — so labels speak in careful marketing language. We discern each product’s intended use from its name, label claims, and label statements, then grade the clinical evidence for that use. How these ratings are computed
Not established

The graded evidence we hold for these ingredients covers different conditions than the ones this product is marketed for, so there's no established rating for its stated use — see White Mulberry's own graded uses on its monograph.

Why this rating?
  • The label markets this product for: Blood sugar support and cholesterol management.
  • We looked for evidence on: Diabetes, Impaired glucose tolerance (prediabetes), Hyperlipidemia, Hypertension, Obesity, Metabolic syndrome — and 1 related terms.
  • The closest evidence on file: White Mulberry is rated "Insufficient Reliable Evidence To Rate" for Diabetes (Natural Medicines).
  • Also on file: White Mulberry is rated "Insufficient Reliable Evidence To Rate" for Hyperlipidemia, Hypertension, Obesity, Impaired glucose tolerance (prediabetes).

The evidence for white mulberry extract isn't established in the data we hold. The product has been studied for androgenic alopecia (hair loss), osteoporosis, common cold, diabetes, and high cholesterol, but each of these conditions has insufficient reliable evidence to rate its effectiveness.

While lab and animal research suggest white mulberry leaf may lower blood glucose, we don't have strong clinical evidence for any of these uses in humans.

How safe is it?

Well-documented data
Safety Information · database check
Well characterized

Adverse-effect, pregnancy, and general safety data are on file for most of these ingredients.

Why this rating?
  • We hold adverse-effect (side-effect) data for 1 of the 1 matched ingredient.
  • Pregnancy & breastfeeding safety ratings cover 1 of 1.
  • General safety write-ups exist for 1 of 1.
  • Remember: this measures how much safety information exists. Thin data is not the same as being safe.

White mulberry leaf powder is generally well tolerated as a food, but concentrated supplements are less studied and may lower blood sugar. The most common side effects reported in a clinical trial were bloating and flatulence (affecting about half of participants), loose stools (about 25%), and constipation (about 21%) — though these tended to ease over time.

Avoid medicinal amounts during pregnancy and breastfeeding; there isn't enough safety data to know either way, so talk with your doctor or pharmacist for personalized advice.

Antidiabetes Drugs

Theoretically, white mulberry leaf might increase the risk of hypoglycemia when taken with antidiabetes drugs.
Clinical research shows that white mulberry leaf can lower blood glucose levels. Advise patients to monitor glucose levels closely.

Likelihood Possible Evidence D
Organic Cation Transporter 2 (Oct2) Substrates

Theoretically, white mulberry leaf might slow the elimination and increase the adverse effects of drugs which are OCT2 substrates.
Animal research shows that coadministration of white mulberry leaf extract with metformin, an OCT2 substrate, slows the renal elimination of metformin via inhibition of OCT2 activity. OCT2 is expressed in the kidneys and is responsible for transporting cationic drugs into tubular epithelial cells in order to be excreted in the urine.

White Mulberry Extract by BulkSupplements.com: Common Questions

Does White Mulberry Extract by BulkSupplements.com interact with any medications?
Yes. Based on its ingredients, White Mulberry Extract has a known interaction with 87 medications. Use the checker to see how it interacts with a specific drug.
How can one product interact with so many drugs?
White Mulberry Extract contains a single active ingredient, and that one ingredient can interact with many different medications on its own. We check it against each medication and show the mechanism responsible.
Where does this information come from?
The product label data comes from the NIH Dietary Supplement Label Database (DSLD); the interaction data is built on the Natural Medicines database and reviewed by HelloPharmacist pharmacists.
Can I take this if I'm on metformin for diabetes?
Not without talking to your pharmacist first. White mulberry leaf may slow how your body clears metformin, and it can also lower blood sugar on its own. You'd need close monitoring and possibly a dose adjustment from your doctor.
What side effects should I expect?
Most people who take white mulberry leaf powder report mild, temporary digestive issues — bloating, gas, loose stools, or constipation. These tend to get better over a few weeks, but about half of trial participants experienced bloating or gas early on.
Is there evidence this actually works for what I want to use it for?
The evidence isn't strong enough to establish it works. Studies have looked at white mulberry for hair loss, bone health, cold prevention, diabetes, and high cholesterol, but we don't have reliable evidence for any of these uses yet.
Is it safe to take during pregnancy or breastfeeding?
No — there isn't enough safety data. Avoid medicinal amounts during pregnancy and while breastfeeding. If you're pregnant or nursing and want to try this, talk with your doctor or pharmacist first.
Why does this interact with so many medications?
This product only has documented interactions with two drug types — antidiabetes drugs and OCT2 substrates — but those two categories together include 86 individual medications across different classes, doses, and brand names.
