Every active ingredient lists its own amount on the label.

Why this rating?
  • The label discloses an exact amount for 1 of its 1 active ingredient.
  • No proprietary blends here — you can verify the dose of every single component.

This product contains one active ingredient: white mulberry leaf extract at 1,000 mg per capsule. The extract comes from the leaves of the white mulberry plant and is traditionally used in botanical medicine.

The capsule also holds inactive ingredients — silica, vegetable stearate, and vegetable cellulose — which are fillers and binders that help hold the supplement together.

Evidence for Intended Use · database check
By FDA rules, dietary supplements can’t claim to treat, cure, or prevent disease — so labels speak in careful marketing language. We discern each product’s intended use from its name, label claims, and label statements, then grade the clinical evidence for that use. How these ratings are computed
Not established

The graded evidence we hold for these ingredients covers different conditions than the ones this product is marketed for, so there's no established rating for its stated use — see White Mulberry's own graded uses on its monograph.

Why this rating?
  • The label markets this product for: support healthy blood sugar levels.
  • We looked for evidence on: Diabetes, Impaired glucose tolerance (prediabetes), Glycemic control, Metabolic health.
  • The closest evidence on file: White Mulberry is rated "Insufficient Reliable Evidence To Rate" for Diabetes (Natural Medicines).
  • Also on file: White Mulberry is rated "Insufficient Reliable Evidence To Rate" for Impaired glucose tolerance (prediabetes).

The evidence for white mulberry leaf extract isn't established in the data we hold. The product has been studied for androgenic alopecia (hair loss), osteoporosis, common cold, diabetes, and high cholesterol, but current research doesn't provide reliable evidence to rate how well it works for any of these conditions.

How safe is it?

Well-documented data
Safety Information · database check
Well characterized

Adverse-effect, pregnancy, and general safety data are on file for most of these ingredients.

Why this rating?
  • We hold adverse-effect (side-effect) data for 1 of the 1 matched ingredient.
  • Pregnancy & breastfeeding safety ratings cover 1 of 1.
  • General safety write-ups exist for 1 of 1.
  • Remember: this measures how much safety information exists. Thin data is not the same as being safe.

White mulberry leaf is generally well tolerated when taken by mouth. In a clinical trial, participants taking 4.6 grams three times daily experienced bloating and flatulence (about half), loose stools (about a quarter), and constipation (about one-fifth), but these side effects often improved over time.

The safety data in pregnancy and lactation isn't sufficient — the facts advise against medicinal amounts during pregnancy and breastfeeding. If you're pregnant or nursing and considering this supplement, talk with your pharmacist or doctor for personalized guidance.

Antidiabetes Drugs

Theoretically, white mulberry leaf might increase the risk of hypoglycemia when taken with antidiabetes drugs.
Clinical research shows that white mulberry leaf can lower blood glucose levels. Advise patients to monitor glucose levels closely.

Likelihood Possible Evidence D
Organic Cation Transporter 2 (Oct2) Substrates

Theoretically, white mulberry leaf might slow the elimination and increase the adverse effects of drugs which are OCT2 substrates.
Animal research shows that coadministration of white mulberry leaf extract with metformin, an OCT2 substrate, slows the renal elimination of metformin via inhibition of OCT2 activity. OCT2 is expressed in the kidneys and is responsible for transporting cationic drugs into tubular epithelial cells in order to be excreted in the urine.

White Mulberry Leaf Extract 1,000 mg by Bio Nutrition: Common Questions

Does White Mulberry Leaf Extract 1,000 mg by Bio Nutrition interact with any medications?
Yes. Based on its ingredients, White Mulberry Leaf Extract 1,000 mg has a known interaction with 87 medications. Use the checker to see how it interacts with a specific drug.
How can one product interact with so many drugs?
White Mulberry Leaf Extract 1,000 mg contains a single active ingredient, and that one ingredient can interact with many different medications on its own. We check it against each medication and show the mechanism responsible.
Where does this information come from?
The product label data comes from the NIH Dietary Supplement Label Database (DSLD); the interaction data is built on the Natural Medicines database and reviewed by HelloPharmacist pharmacists.
Will this help with my blood sugar or diabetes?
The evidence isn't established in the data we hold. White mulberry leaf extract has been studied for diabetes, but current research doesn't provide reliable evidence to rate how well it works for blood sugar control.
What side effects might I notice?
Most people tolerate it well. The most common side effects are bloating, flatulence, loose stools, and constipation — but these often improve over time. In one trial, about half of participants experienced bloating or gas, a quarter had loose stools, and one-fifth had constipation.
Is it safe to take if I'm pregnant or breastfeeding?
The safety data isn't sufficient to know either way. The facts advise against medicinal amounts during pregnancy and breastfeeding. Talk with your pharmacist or doctor for personalized advice based on your situation.
Why do I need to check my diabetes and blood pressure medications?
White mulberry leaf extract can lower blood glucose levels, which may increase the risk of low blood sugar if you're on diabetes medications. It can also slow how your kidneys clear certain drugs (like metformin), allowing them to build up — that's why a conversation with your pharmacist matters.
Does this product contain any fillers?
It has three inactive ingredients: silica, vegetable stearate, and vegetable cellulose. These are standard binders and fillers that help the capsule hold together.
