HelloPharmacist Scorecard of Wild Yam Root by Mountain Meadow Herbs
Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Low disclosure
This liquid contains four ingredients. The active ones are glycerin (a naturally derived humectant and laxative agent), wild yam root extract (the main botanical), grain alcohol (a solvent and preservative), and distilled water.
There are no inactive fillers listed.
Does it work?
Strong evidence
The evidence for wild yam root's effectiveness is sparse. For menopausal symptoms, the data suggests it's likely ineffective.
For other conditions like sexual dysfunction, dysmenorrhea, infertility, and gallbladder disease, we don't have enough reliable evidence to know either way. Glycerin, the other active ingredient here, is rated likely effective for constipation, but that's not what this product is marketed for.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Orally, wild yam is generally well tolerated, though headache, fever, upset stomach, and vomiting can happen — especially at higher doses. A rare case of anaphylaxis has been reported.
Glycerin can cause bloating, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, dizziness, and headache at larger doses, and may cause dehydration. Both ingredients have limited long-term safety data, so don't use medicinal doses without talking to your doctor first.
During pregnancy, there isn't enough data on wild yam to know whether it's safe — avoid it and stick with your doctor's advice. The same goes for breastfeeding.
Glycerin's pregnancy and lactation safety information isn't on file here.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
If you're on any estrogen-based medication — hormone replacement therapy, birth control pills, or other hormonal drugs — double-check with your pharmacist before adding this product. Wild yam could theoretically strengthen or weaken how your estrogen works.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFormula with limited ingredient disclosure with strong clinical evidence behind its ingredients' uses. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
Wild yam root is heavily marketed for menopausal symptoms, but the data shows it's likely not effective for that. If you take estrogen-based medications or hormonal birth control, this product could interfere with how they work — check with us before you start.
For other uses, the evidence just isn't there yet.
