What is this page for?
First and foremost: checking Chelated Chromium against your medications. The heart of this page is the interaction checker and the full interaction report — how this product’s ingredients may interact with prescription and over-the-counter medicines you may be taking.
Around that, we add a pharmacist’s high-level view of the product as a whole — what’s inside, the evidence for its stated use, how transparent the label is, and what safety data exists — so you can see the full picture in one place. It’s educational information from our licensed clinical databases and the clinical staff at HelloPharmacist — not medical advice — and we don’t sell or endorse products. Our editorial policy

Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Full disclosure
Bluebonnet's Chelated Chromium is a single-ingredient supplement. The one active ingredient is chromium, a mineral that plays a role in how your body handles blood sugar and uses insulin.
It's delivered in a chelated form — that means it's bound to other compounds to help your body absorb it more easily. The capsule also contains inactive ingredients like cellulose, hypromellose, purified water, and magnesium stearate, which are standard binders and fillers.
Does it work?
Strong evidence
The evidence we have shows chromium is likely effective for treating chromium deficiency — a rare condition in people eating a typical diet. For type 2 diabetes and prediabetes (impaired glucose tolerance), the data suggests it's possibly effective for diabetes itself but possibly ineffective for prediabetes.
We don't have strong evidence supporting its use for schizophrenia or high blood pressure.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Chromium is generally well tolerated at typical supplement doses. The most common side effects are gastrointestinal irritation, headaches, insomnia, irritability, and mood changes.
Rare serious effects — kidney or liver damage, a muscle breakdown condition (rhabdomyolysis), and low platelet counts — have been reported, and skin rashes or allergic reactions can occur in some people. High or long-term doses pose unknown risks, so stick to normal doses unless your doctor advises otherwise.
During pregnancy, small amounts from a balanced diet or prenatal vitamin are considered acceptable, but extra supplement doses should be avoided unless your doctor recommends it. The safety data on breastfeeding is limited — talk with your pharmacist or doctor before using this while nursing.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Before starting Bluebonnet's Chelated Chromium, double-check with your pharmacist if you take insulin, any antidiabetes medication (oral diabetes drugs), levothyroxine for thyroid replacement, or NSAIDs or aspirin regularly. These interactions are well documented and could affect how well your medications work or your blood sugar control.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with clinical evidence supporting its stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
Chromium makes sense if you have a documented chromium deficiency or if your doctor has suggested it for blood sugar control — but only if you're not on insulin or diabetes medications without close monitoring. If you take levothyroxine, antidiabetes drugs, or NSAIDs, check with your pharmacist first.
This isn't a supplement to start on your own if you're managing a chronic condition.

Chelated Chromium by Bluebonnet Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Bluebonnet's Chelated Chromium contains one active ingredient — chromium — that interacts with several medication types.
The most serious concern is with insulin and antidiabetes drugs (Moderate severity). Chromium may boost how well insulin works and lower blood sugar levels, which could push your glucose too low, especially if you're already on diabetes medication.
If you take insulin or any oral diabetes drug, you'll want to monitor your blood sugar more closely while using this supplement.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
Chromium also interacts with levothyroxine (Moderate severity), the thyroid hormone replacement used in products like Synthroid. Research shows chromium can reduce how much levothyroxine your body absorbs — one study found a 17% drop in blood levels.
The two should be taken several hours apart to minimize this effect.
Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs like ibuprofen and aspirin (both Minor severity) may increase how much chromium your body absorbs and retains, which could raise chromium levels. Altogether, these interactions span 178 individual medications.

For each ingredient in Chelated Chromium with known interactions, here are the types of medications it can affect. Open any type for the detail — or search your exact drug in the checker above.
Chromium
Antidiabetes Drugs
Theoretically, chromium may have additive effects with antidiabetic agents and increase the risk of hypoglycemia.
Some research shows that taking chromium might lower blood glucose levels, especially in patients with poorly controlled type 2 diabetes.
Insulin
Theoretically, concomitant use of chromium and insulin might increase the risk of hypoglycemia.
In clinical research, chromium has been shown to increase insulin sensitivity,
Levothyroxine (Synthroid, Others)
Chromium might bind levothyroxine in the intestinal tract and decrease levothyroxine absorption.
Clinical research in healthy volunteers shows that taking chromium picolinate 1000 mcg with levothyroxine 1 mg decreases serum levels of levothyroxine by 17% when compared to taking levothyroxine alone. Advise patients to take levothyroxine at least 30 minutes before or 3-4 hours after taking chromium.
Aspirin
Theoretically, aspirin might increase chromium absorption.
Animal research suggests that aspirin may increase chromium absorption and chromium levels in the blood.
Nonsteroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs (Nsaids)
NSAIDs might increase chromium levels in the body.
Drugs that are prostaglandin inhibitors, such as NSAIDs, seem to increase chromium absorption and retention.
