Answer

Thanks for reaching out! Yes, amoxicillin is safe to take with Pepcid Dual Action Complete (which is the brand name equivalent to the drug you stated in your question, Wal-Mart generic brand Equate Dual Action Complete). There is no drug interaction to be concerned about.

What Is Pepcid Dual Action Complete?

Pepcid Dual Action Complete (and Equate Dual Action Complete) contains the following drugs:

  • Famotidine
  • Calcium Carbonate
  • Magnesium Hydroxide

Famotidine is classified as an 'H2-blocker' and is the drug in the brand name product Pepcid. It works by decreasing the amount of acid made in the stomach by binding to 'H2' receptors in the stomach, which reduces overall acid secretion.

Calcium carbonate and magnesium hydroxide work as antacids and are the ingredients you find in Tums. They neutralize pre-existing stomach acid.

Together, famotidine and calcium carbonate/magnesium hydroxide work together to both neutralize stomach acid (so it works quickly) and reduces subsequent acid secretion.

Drugs that alter the acidity of the stomach can certainly interact with a number of drugs, but fortunately, amoxicillin is not one of them.

What Is Amoxicillin?

Amoxicillin is used to treat certain infections caused by bacteria, such as pneumonia; bronchitis (infection of the airway tubes leading to the lungs); and infections of the ears, nose, throat, urinary tract, and skin. It is also used in combination with other medications to eliminate H. pylori, a bacteria that causes ulcers.

Amoxicillin is in a class of medications called penicillin-like antibiotics. It works by stopping the growth of bacteria.

Pepcid Complete With Amoxicillin

As stated, there is no drug interaction between amoxicillin and Pepcid Complete (i.e. Equate Dual Action Complete). They can be taken together.
