Acacia Rigidula + Homatropine Methylbromide, Hydrocodone
Homatropine Methylbromide, Hydrocodone brand names: Hycodan, Tussigon.
Homatropine Methylbromide, Hydrocodone falls into 2 drug categories that Acacia Rigidula can interact with; the most serious is rated moderate. Theoretically, Acacia rigidula products that are adulterated with beta-methylphenylethylamine (BMPEA) might increase the levels of CYP2D6 substrates.

These two interact in 2 distinct ways. Each one is explained separately below.
Why Are There 2 Interactions?
Acacia Rigidula interacts with whole categories of medication. Homatropine Methylbromide, Hydrocodone falls into 2 of those categories, so it can interact with Acacia Rigidula in 2 different ways. We’ve listed each one below — your overall risk is driven by the most serious of them (Moderate).
CYTOCHROME P450 2D6 (CYP2D6) SUBSTRATES
1 of 2Why this applies to Homatropine Methylbromide, Hydrocodone
Homatropine Methylbromide, Hydrocodone falls under CYTOCHROME P450 2D6 (CYP2D6) SUBSTRATES — the group Acacia Rigidula interacts with.
In vitro research shows that BMPEA, an adulterant found in many Acacia rigidula products, strongly inhibits CYP2D6 enzyme.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the wrinkle with this combo. The hydrocodone in Hycodan is actually a prodrug in part. Your body uses an enzyme called CYP2D6 to convert it into hydromorphone, which is what gives a chunk of the pain and cough relief. Some Acacia rigidula products have been found spiked with a stimulant (BMPEA) that can block CYP2D6.
If that enzyme is blocked, you might convert less hydrocodone into its stronger form, so the medicine could feel like it's working a little less well. Keep in mind this is only based on lab studies, not real patients, so it's theoretical. The bigger concern is honestly the hidden stimulant itself stacking with an opioid. I'd skip this supplement and check with your pharmacist or doctor first.

CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES
2 of 2Homatropine Methylbromide, Hydrocodone also falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES.
In vitro research shows that BMPEA, an adulterant found in many Acacia rigidula products, inhibits CYP3A4 enzyme by 37%.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the basic idea with this combo. Hycodan contains hydrocodone, an opioid cough medicine that your liver partly processes through an enzyme called CYP3A4. Some Acacia rigidula products have been found to contain a stimulant called BMPEA, and in lab studies BMPEA slowed that same enzyme down by about a third. In theory, that could let hydrocodone build up a bit more than usual, which might mean stronger effects like extra drowsiness, dizziness, constipation, or slowed breathing.
I want to be honest though, this is based only on test-tube research, not real people, so it's more of a caution than a proven problem. The bigger concern is that these supplements are poorly regulated and may contain hidden stimulants. Please check with your pharmacist or doctor before mixing the two.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Homatropine Methylbromide, Hydrocodone page
“Hycodan (homatropine with hydrocodone) is an opioid cough medicine, so the real danger on this list is anything that deepens sedation or slows breathing, and 78 of the 233 supplements and herbs on file do exactly that. Alcohol, whether beer or wine, sits among the 11 major-rated entries with solid human evidence behind it.”

About Acacia Rigidula
What is Acacia Rigidula?
- Weight loss
- Energy and stimulation
- Boosting metabolism
- Appetite control
- Pre-workout/athletic performance
Acacia rigidula is a shrub from Texas and Mexico that is marketed in weight-loss and energy supplements. There is very little reliable human evidence that it works, and some products have been found to contain an unapproved stimulant drug (BMPEA), which raises real safety concerns. Most people should avoid it and talk to a pharmacist or doctor before trying any product containing it.
