Voxelotor falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Acacia Rigidula interacts with.

Theoretically, Acacia rigidula products that are adulterated with beta-methylphenylethylamine (BMPEA) might increase the levels of CYP3A4 substrates.
In vitro research shows that BMPEA, an adulterant found in many Acacia rigidula products, inhibits CYP3A4 enzyme by 37%.

Here's the gist for Oxbryta (voxelotor): your body clears it mainly through a liver enzyme called CYP3A4. Some Acacia rigidula products have been found spiked with a stimulant called BMPEA, and lab research suggests BMPEA can slow that same enzyme down by about a third. If it slows the cleanup, more voxelotor could linger in your system, which may mean more side effects like headache, nausea, diarrhea, or stomach pain.

I want to be honest about the strength here. This is only test-tube data and a theoretical concern, not something proven in people. Still, with adulterated stimulant products I'd lean cautious. Please check with your pharmacist or doctor before pairing the two, and don't change your Oxbryta on your own.

Oxbryta (voxelotor) is approved to treat sickle cell disease (SCD) in adults and in children as young as 4 years old. It works by targeting the underlying problem in sickle cell disease — the abnormal hemoglobin that causes red blood cells to take on a rigid, sickle shape.

This approval was granted under the FDA's accelerated approval pathway, based on the drug's ability to raise hemoglobin levels. Continued approval may depend on results from confirmatory clinical trials showing broader clinical benefit.
