Why this applies to Tapentadol

Tapentadol falls under CYTOCHROME P450 2C9 (CYP2C9) SUBSTRATES — the group African Wild Potato interacts with.

In vitro research shows that African wild potato extract inhibits cytochrome P450 2C9 (CYP2C9). However, this effect has yet to be reported in humans. Until more is known, use with caution. Theoretically, concomitant use of African wild potato with CYP2C9 substrates might increase the risk for adverse effects from these substrates. Some of these drugs include nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) such as diclofenac (Cataflam, Voltaren), ibuprofen (Motrin), meloxicam (Mobic), and piroxicam (Feldene); celecoxib (Celebrex); amitriptyline (Elavil); warfarin (Coumadin); glipizide (Glucotrol); losartan (Cozaar); and others.

Here's the honest version: the concern on file is that African Wild Potato might block a liver enzyme called CYP2C9. That matters for some drugs, but tapentadol leans far more on a different process called glucuronidation, with only minor help from CYP enzymes. So the specific CYP2C9 worry doesn't line up neatly with how your body actually handles tapentadol, and the whole interaction is based only on test-tube research, not real people.

Still, since tapentadol is a strong opioid, I'd be cautious about adding any unproven supplement. If the levels did creep up, you'd notice things like extra drowsiness, dizziness, nausea, constipation, or slower breathing. Please run this by your pharmacist or doctor before combining them.

What Is Tapentadol Used For?

Brand names: Nucynta, Nucynta ER

Tapentadol tablets (including Nucynta and Tapentadol Hydrochloride tablets) are used for severe acute pain in adults when other treatments are not adequate. Nucynta tablets are also approved for acute pain in children aged 6 and older who weigh at least 40 kg.

Nucynta ER and tapentadol extended-release tablets are used for severe, ongoing pain that requires around-the-clock opioid treatment and cannot be managed with other options, including severe neuropathic pain (nerve pain) caused by diabetic peripheral neuropathy in adults. Extended-release formulations are not intended for as-needed use.
