Why this applies to Vinblastine

Vinblastine falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group African Wild Potato interacts with.

In vitro evidence shows that African wild potato extract can inhibit cytochrome P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) enzyme activity by up to 86%. Theoretically, African wild potato might increase levels of drugs metabolized by CYP3A4. However, in human research, African wild potato does not seem to affect the pharmacokinetics of Efavirenz, a CYP3A4 substrate. Until more is known, use African wild potato cautiously or avoid in patients taking drugs metabolized by CYP3A4. Some drugs metabolized by CYP3A4 include lovastatin (Mevacor), ketoconazole (Nizoral), itraconazole (Sporanox), fexofenadine (Allegra), triazolam (Halcion), and numerous others.

Here's the concern with pairing African Wild Potato and vinblastine. Your liver uses an enzyme called CYP3A4 to break down vinblastine and clear it from your body. In lab dish studies, this plant blocked that enzyme quite strongly. In theory, that could slow how fast you clear vinblastine and let it build up higher than intended.

With a chemo drug like this, even modest extra exposure matters. Higher levels can mean worse low blood counts, infections, nerve tingling or numbness, constipation, and mouth sores. I want to be honest though: this is only test-tube evidence, and in one human study the plant didn't change levels of a similar drug. Still, while you're on vinblastine, please don't add this supplement without first clearing it with your oncology team.

What Is Vinblastine Used For?

Brand name: Velban

Vinblastine Sulfate Injection is used in the treatment of a range of cancers. Conditions that tend to respond well include generalized Hodgkin's disease, lymphocytic lymphoma, histiocytic lymphoma, advanced mycosis fungoides (a type of skin lymphoma), advanced testicular cancer, Kaposi's sarcoma, and Letterer-Siwe disease (a rare immune condition also called histiocytosis X).

It may also be used for cancers that respond less reliably, such as choriocarcinoma resistant to other chemotherapy drugs, and breast cancer that has not responded to hormonal therapy. Vinblastine is often given as part of a combination chemotherapy regimen alongside other cancer medicines to improve response rates.
