Asciminib falls under ORAL DRUGS — the group Algin interacts with.

Theoretically, algin can alter the absorption of oral drugs. Laboratory research shows that algin, when consumed as part of the diet or used as a thickening agent in infant formula, reduces the absorption of certain minerals. Also, algin has been used as a tablet binder and disintegrant to enhance drug bioavailability. To avoid changes in absorption, take algin 30-60 minutes after oral medications.

Here's the simple version: algin is a seaweed fiber that swells into a thick gel in your stomach. The concern is that this gel could trap or slow down a pill taken at the same time, so a little less of your Asciminib (Scemblix) might get absorbed. Asciminib isn't a prodrug, so it doesn't need activating. If less gets in, the worry is simply that it works a bit less well at controlling your leukemia.

Honestly, this is a theoretical concern based on lab studies, not strong real-world data, and the interaction is rated minor. Still, with a cancer medicine you don't want to gamble on absorption. An easy fix is spacing them out: take your Asciminib first, then wait 30 to 60 minutes before any algin product. Please run this by your oncology team or pharmacist before changing anything.

What Is Asciminib Used For?

Brand name: Scemblix

Scemblix (asciminib) is used to treat adult patients with Philadelphia chromosome-positive chronic myeloid leukemia in chronic phase (Ph+ CML-CP) — a type of blood cancer driven by an abnormal protein called BCR-ABL1. It covers three groups: people newly diagnosed with Ph+ CML-CP, people who have already been treated for Ph+ CML-CP, and people whose cancer carries a specific mutation called T315I that makes it harder to treat.

The use in newly diagnosed Ph+ CML-CP was approved under accelerated approval based on early response data. Continued approval for that specific use may depend on results from confirmatory trials confirming long-term clinical benefit.
