Brexpiprazole falls under ORAL DRUGS — the group Algin interacts with.

Theoretically, algin can alter the absorption of oral drugs. Laboratory research shows that algin, when consumed as part of the diet or used as a thickening agent in infant formula, reduces the absorption of certain minerals. Also, algin has been used as a tablet binder and disintegrant to enhance drug bioavailability. To avoid changes in absorption, take algin 30-60 minutes after oral medications.

Here's the gist: algin (the seaweed fiber found in heartburn products and as a food thickener) forms a thick gel in your stomach. The concern with Rexulti (brexpiprazole) is purely about absorption, not about how your body breaks the drug down. In theory, that gel could trap a little of your tablet and keep some of it from being absorbed, which might mean slightly less of the medication reaching your bloodstream.

I want to be honest with you though: this is a theoretical concern based on lab work, not real cases of treatment failure. It's rated minor. A simple fix is timing. Take your brexpiprazole first, then wait 30 to 60 minutes before using algin. If you have questions, your pharmacist or doctor can help you set up a routine.

Algin (alginate) is a fiber-like substance from brown seaweed that is widely used as a thickener, gel, and binder in foods and medicines. Its best-known medical use is in heartburn products, where it forms a barrier that helps reduce acid reflux; evidence for other uses like lowering cholesterol or weight loss is weaker. It is generally considered safe in food amounts, but check with your pharmacist before using it as a supplement, especially if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.

What Is Brexpiprazole Used For?

Brand name: Rexulti

Brexpiprazole tablets are approved for two uses in adults: as an add-on (adjunctive) treatment alongside antidepressants for major depressive disorder (MDD), and as a treatment for schizophrenia. These uses apply to both the generic brexpiprazole tablets and Rexulti.

Rexulti has one additional approved use: treating agitation associated with dementia due to Alzheimer's disease in adults. Rexulti is also approved for schizophrenia in adolescents ages 13 and older. Note that Rexulti is not approved for dementia-related psychosis without agitation from Alzheimer's disease, and it is not meant to be used on an as-needed basis for Alzheimer's-related agitation.
