Cobimetinib Fumarate falls under ORAL DRUGS — the group Algin interacts with.

Theoretically, algin can alter the absorption of oral drugs. Laboratory research shows that algin, when consumed as part of the diet or used as a thickening agent in infant formula, reduces the absorption of certain minerals. Also, algin has been used as a tablet binder and disintegrant to enhance drug bioavailability. To avoid changes in absorption, take algin 30-60 minutes after oral medications.

Here's the simple version: algin (the seaweed fiber found in some heartburn products) forms a thick gel in your stomach. In theory, that gel could trap a little of your cobimetinib (Cotellic) tablet and keep your body from soaking up the full dose. Cobimetinib is the active drug itself, not a prodrug, so absorbing less of it could mean a bit less of the cancer-fighting effect you're counting on.

I want to be honest, though: this concern is only theoretical, based on how fiber behaves, not on real cases with this medicine. To stay on the safe side, a good habit is to take algin about 30 to 60 minutes after your cobimetinib. Since this is a serious cancer therapy, please run any seaweed or fiber supplement past your oncologist or pharmacist first.

What Is Cobimetinib Used For?

Brand name: Cotellic

Cobimetinib is approved for two uses in adults. First, it is used in combination with another drug called vemurafenib to treat melanoma (a type of skin cancer) that cannot be surgically removed or has spread to other parts of the body — but only when the tumor carries a specific genetic change called a BRAF V600E or V600K mutation. A lab test must confirm this mutation before treatment begins.

Second, cobimetinib can be used on its own (as a single agent) to treat adults with histiocytic neoplasms — a rare group of cancers involving immune cells called histiocytes.
