Deflazacort falls under ORAL DRUGS — the group Algin interacts with.

Theoretically, algin can alter the absorption of oral drugs. Laboratory research shows that algin, when consumed as part of the diet or used as a thickening agent in infant formula, reduces the absorption of certain minerals. Also, algin has been used as a tablet binder and disintegrant to enhance drug bioavailability. To avoid changes in absorption, take algin 30-60 minutes after oral medications.

Here's the gist with Algin and your Deflazacort (Emflaza). Algin is a soluble seaweed fiber that swells into a thick gel in your stomach. In theory, that gel could grab onto a pill sitting nearby and slow or slightly reduce how much of the medicine gets absorbed. For Deflazacort, which the body activates and uses to calm inflammation in Duchenne muscular dystrophy, less absorption could mean you get a little less benefit than expected.

The good news is this is a minor, theoretical concern based on how fibers behave, not on real reports of problems. To play it safe, simply take your Deflazacort first and wait 30 to 60 minutes before using Algin. If you have questions about timing, your pharmacist is happy to help.

What Is Deflazacort Used For?

Brand name: Emflaza

Deflazacort treats Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD), a rare genetic muscle disease that causes progressive muscle weakness. It is available under several brand names, each with slightly different age approvals.

Emflaza and Jaythari (both tablets and oral suspension) are approved for patients 2 years of age and older. Deflazacort tablets, Deflazacort oral suspension, Kymbee (tablet and oral suspension), and Pyquvi (oral suspension) are approved for patients 5 years of age and older.
