Finasteride falls under ORAL DRUGS — the group Algin interacts with.

Theoretically, algin can alter the absorption of oral drugs. Laboratory research shows that algin, when consumed as part of the diet or used as a thickening agent in infant formula, reduces the absorption of certain minerals. Also, algin has been used as a tablet binder and disintegrant to enhance drug bioavailability. To avoid changes in absorption, take algin 30-60 minutes after oral medications.

Here's the gist with finasteride (Propecia or Proscar) and algin. Algin is a seaweed fiber that swells into a thick gel in your stomach. In theory, that gel could grab onto a pill like finasteride as it dissolves and slightly slow or reduce how much your body soaks up. If less gets absorbed, finasteride may not work quite as well for shrinking the prostate or helping with hair loss. Finasteride isn't a prodrug, so this is just about absorption, not activation.

I'll be honest: this is a theoretical concern based on lab pharmacology, not real patient reports, and it's rated minor. Food amounts of algin are very unlikely to matter. If you take an algin supplement, a simple fix is to space it 30 to 60 minutes after your finasteride. Run it by your pharmacist if you're unsure.

Algin (alginate) is a fiber-like substance from brown seaweed that is widely used as a thickener, gel, and binder in foods and medicines. Its best-known medical use is in heartburn products, where it forms a barrier that helps reduce acid reflux; evidence for other uses like lowering cholesterol or weight loss is weaker. It is generally considered safe in food amounts, but check with your pharmacist before using it as a supplement, especially if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.

About Finasteride

What Is Finasteride Used For?

Brand names: Propecia, Proscar

Finasteride tablets (including the brand Proscar) are used in men with an enlarged prostate (benign prostatic hyperplasia, or BPH) to improve urinary symptoms, lower the risk of acute urinary retention (a sudden inability to urinate), and reduce the need for prostate surgery. Finasteride tablets may also be used alongside the alpha-blocker doxazosin to slow the progression of BPH symptoms.

Propecia (and finasteride 1 mg coated tablets) is indicated for the treatment of male pattern hair loss (androgenetic alopecia) in men only. Propecia is not approved for use in women, and its effectiveness for hair loss at the temples has not been established. Finasteride is not approved for the prevention of prostate cancer.
