Griseofulvin falls under ORAL DRUGS — the group Algin interacts with.

Theoretically, algin can alter the absorption of oral drugs. Laboratory research shows that algin, when consumed as part of the diet or used as a thickening agent in infant formula, reduces the absorption of certain minerals. Also, algin has been used as a tablet binder and disintegrant to enhance drug bioavailability. To avoid changes in absorption, take algin 30-60 minutes after oral medications.

Here's the simple version: algin is a soluble seaweed fiber that swells into a thick gel in your stomach. The concern with griseofulvin is purely about absorption, not how your body breaks the drug down. That thick gel could, in theory, surround the medication and slow or reduce how much of it gets soaked into your bloodstream. Since griseofulvin already absorbs unevenly (it actually works better with fatty foods), anything that traps it in the gut might mean a weaker dose reaching your skin or nails.

That said, this is theoretical and rated minor. It comes from lab work, not real patient reports. Food amounts of algin likely won't matter much. If you use an algin heartburn product or supplement, an easy fix is spacing it 30 to 60 minutes after your griseofulvin. Check with your pharmacist to be safe.

What Is Griseofulvin Used For?

Brand names: Fulvicin PG, Fulvicin-U/F, Grisactin Ultra, Grisactin

Griseofulvin treats dermatophyte (ringworm-type) fungal infections of the skin, hair, and nails that haven't cleared up with topical (cream or ointment) treatment alone. It is used for tinea corporis (ringworm of the body), tinea pedis (athlete's foot), tinea cruris (jock itch), tinea barbae (ringworm of the beard area), tinea capitis (ringworm of the scalp), and tinea unguium (fungal nail infection).

It only works against specific dermatophyte fungi. Griseofulvin does not treat bacterial infections, yeast infections (candidiasis), or other fungal infections such as histoplasmosis, sporotrichosis, or tinea versicolor. A lab test or fungal culture should confirm the infection before treatment starts.
