Lorlatinib falls under ORAL DRUGS — the group Algin interacts with.

Theoretically, algin can alter the absorption of oral drugs. Laboratory research shows that algin, when consumed as part of the diet or used as a thickening agent in infant formula, reduces the absorption of certain minerals. Also, algin has been used as a tablet binder and disintegrant to enhance drug bioavailability. To avoid changes in absorption, take algin 30-60 minutes after oral medications.

Here's the gist for your Lorbrena (lorlatinib): algin is basically a soluble seaweed fiber that swells into a thick gel in your stomach. The concern is purely physical, not about how your liver processes the drug. That gel could, in theory, trap a swallowed tablet and slightly slow or reduce how much lorlatinib your body actually absorbs. Less drug getting in could mean it works a little less well against the cancer.

I want to be honest with you though: this is a theoretical worry based on lab work, not real patient reports, and it's rated minor. Still, since lorlatinib is a serious cancer medicine, separate them by taking algin 30 to 60 minutes after your dose, and run it by your oncology pharmacist first.

What Is Lorlatinib Used For?

Lorbrena (lorlatinib) is used to treat adults with metastatic non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) — meaning lung cancer that has spread — when lab testing confirms the tumor is ALK-positive (has a specific gene change that drives cancer growth). Patients must be tested with an FDA-approved diagnostic test before starting treatment.

Lorbrena has been studied in patients who have not yet received treatment for advanced disease, as well as in patients whose cancer progressed on other ALK-targeting medicines.
